A weather warning has been issued for the Montreal area in anticipation of a major storm expected to hit Tuesday afternoon.

The winter storm warning, issued by Environment Canada at 6:01 a.m. Tuesday, calls for close to 15 centimetres of snow, ice pellets and strong winds to batter the area into the evening. It also forecasts a spate of freezing rain for late Tuesday or early Wednesday morning before temperatures rise abruptly, turning the precipitation into rain.

Environment Canada warns that “rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.”

The federal agency is also urging the public to “consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”

Tuesday’s expected precipitation mix comes two days after the first sustained snowfall of 2024 dropped about 12 cm of snow on the Montreal area.

The city of Montreal is scheduled to hold a press conference Tuesday afternoon to detail how it intends to deal with the expected “weather cocktail.”
