Heat Warning issued ahead of extreme heat this weekend

Be prepared to deal with extreme heat this long weekend as a hot airmass is moving over Southern Manitoba today, with daytime highs reaching into the mid 30’s. 

Environment Canada issued a Heat Warning Saturday morning for much of southern Manitoba. 

For the next two days, we expect temperatures to reach 32 to 36 degrees Celsius with overnight lows near 16C. 

The westerly winds will see temperatures remain elevated tonight, and Sunday will bring another day with daytime temperatures above 30 degrees. 

Smoke from forest fires in the West may dampen daytime highs somewhat, particularly on Sunday. It will also compound the effects of extreme heat with degraded air quality.

 Late Sunday, a cold front will move through the area and that will bring an end to the heat. 

Environment Canada reminds us that extreme heat affects everyone, and we are encouraged to take precautions to prevent heat illnesses. Suggestions include staying out of direct sunlight, drinking plenty of water, taking a cool shower or bath, taking a break in a cool location, and if you must go outside, take water with you.
