Tournament officials announced Tuesday that Daly — a two-time major champion who, at 57, still offers the occasional reminder why he was once nicknamed ‘Wild Thing’ — has already booked his ticket for the Aug. 18-20 birdie-fest at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club.
“John Daly is one of a handful of players in professional golf who is a needle-mover,” said Sean Van Kesteren, the executive director for what is widely recognized as one of the top stops on the PGA Tour Champions circuit. “John is exactly who fans of any sporting event want to come out and see. He is a colourful character that is very entertaining while interacting with his loyal fan-base and still hits the ball a mile.
“Having John Daly commit to playing in Calgary once again takes our tournament to a new level.”
Daly hasn’t won an individual title in several years, but he reminded during the 2022 Shaw Charity Classic that he is still capable of shooting low scores.

Photo by Al Charest/PostmediaAfter struggling to a 73 in the opening round, so frustrated with his flat-stick that he handed it to a fan en route to the 17th tee, he closed with spins of 68 and 67. If not for that lousy first lap and an ice-cold putter, his name might have been near the top of the leaderboard. (Jerry Kelly, who has also committed to a return trip, ultimately prevailed in a playoff after stringing together scores of 68-66-67.)
Even when ‘Long John’ isn’t in contention for the trophy and the white-hat treatment, he’s always being trailed by a massive crowd. Tuesday’s announcement undoubtedly prompted a surge in ticket sales.
“I’ve always said I’ve got the greatest fans in the world, and Calgary is no different. No matter what, through thick and thin, they’ve always stuck by me,” Daly said in a statement. “This tournament always has huge galleries. There is nothing better than getting it going and having the fans get loud and crazy. That’s just the way I like them, so I’m looking forward to getting up to Canada, and hopefully give the fans something to get loud about.”
