It took all 50 games, but the Stratford Hunter Steel Warriors locked up second place in the Midwestern Conference and a favourable first-round series with Brantford.

Coming off a 3-1 loss Thursday to red hot Ayr, Stratford finished the regular season 31-15-4 with an 8-2 win Friday at home over Cambridge.

Cam Daigle had a hat trick in the victory, and Michael Denney added two goals and an assist. Carson Harmer had a goal and three assists while Cole Lewis and Owen England also scored. Kaeden Burger picked up two helpers.

Matthew Perdue stopped 30 shots.

Reid Gammage scored both RedHawks goals. Cambridge goalies Thomas Staszczyszyn and Leland Gill combined to make 39 saves.

The Warriors went 2-for-5 on the power play, while Cambridge was 1-for-3.

Stratford, Elmira and Kitchener-Waterloo all had 66 points, but the Warriors’ held the tiebreak to place second and face the seventh-place Bandits. Dates haven’t been announced.

Listowel earned its first regular season crown since 2018-19 and will get last-place Caledon in the quarters.

In the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Western Conference, St. Marys finished second and will get Sarnia in the opening round.

The schedules for both series have not been announced.

In the Provincial Junior Hockey League, Tavistock hosts Hespeler on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. looking to even the Doherty Division series at two games apiece. The Shamrocks took the first two games, 6-1 and 6-5, but Tavistock held on for a 4-3 win Sunday in Game 3 in Hespeler.

Mitchell is down 2-0 in its Pollock Division series with Mount Forest. The Hawks lost 9-1 in Game 1 on Saturday and fell 2-0 Sunday at home. Game 3 is Thursday back in Mitchell at 7:30 p.m.
