Well Christmas has come and gone, and while I’m happy to have the pressure of gift-giving (and wrapping) behind us, I will miss it. I always feel like Christmas should land deeper in the winter rather than at the beginning of the season. When we really need that cheer, the lights, the festive spirit, is after winter takes its chilly toll. Early February would be a great time for Christmas.

Maybe we just need a second winter holiday of lights and festivities. A booster holiday, if you will. I know we have stuff like Valentine’s Day in February, but that doesn’t really count.

Ah well, Christmas is over and we have a full year—including a leap day on February 29th—before it comes again. I hope all you wonderful Wordlers had a fantastic time this Christmas weekend. Next up: New Years! 2024 is coming!

Let’s do this Wordle!

After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.

Can you solve today’s phrase?

Overall a pretty good guessing game today, though things started off rather lousy. Meaty was not a great opener today, leaving me with a whopping 504 words remaining. Ouch!

Thankfully, clone slashed that number to just five. At this point I could think of a few options. Phone, prone, drone, etc. I figured since I knew of at least two words that started with a ‘P’ I’d just pick one of those and go from there. In retrospect, prone might have been a more strategic choice, but I’m glad I chose phone since it ended up being the Wordle! Huzzah!

Today’s Competitive Wordle Score

I tied the Bot so I get zero points for that but 1 point for guessing in three. 1 point total. Yippee!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word 'phone' is derived from the Greek word "φωνή" (phonē), which means "voice" or "sound." This term was adopted into English in various forms, particularly as a suffix in words like "telephone" (far sound), "microphone" (small sound), and "megaphone" (big sound). The use of 'phone' in these compound words reflects the technology's function related to transmitting, amplifying, or recording sound or voice. Over time, 'phone' has also come to be used as a shorthand for "telephone," reflecting its widespread use and significance in daily communication.

Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.

Here are the rules: 1 point for getting the Wordle in 3 guesses. 2 points for getting it in 2 guesses. 3 points for getting it in 1 guess. 1 point for beating me 0 points for getting it in 4 guesses. -1 point for getting it in 5 guesses. -2 points for getting it in 6 guesses. -3 points for losing. -1 point for losing to me

You can either keep a running tally of your score if that’s your jam or just play day-to-day if you prefer.
