When: Sunday, April 16Where: CAA Centre (Brampton, Ont.)Time: 7 p.m. ETChannel: NHL NetworkStream: FuboTV (Free Trial), Sling, DirecTV StreamIt is seemingly a tale as old as time, two neighbors that are the best in their sport going at it for a championship. Dating back to the first Women’s Worlds in 1990, the U.S. and Canada have met in all but one of the Gold Medal Games, 2019 being the exception. This will be the 21st time the two rivals will meet the championship game, with Canada winning each of the last two titles at the expense of the Americans.
Canada has the all-time advantage as well. They are 93-73-1 against the United States dating back to their first meeting back in 1997. Prior to the World Championships, the U.S. thought they had Canada in the bag during the Rivalry Series, but Canada came back from a 3-0 deficit in the seven-game set, winning the final four games. Canada also won the preliminary round matchup, grabbing the top spot in Group A thanks to a shootout victory.
While many are looking at the firepower of Abby Roque, Hilary Knight and Caroline Harvey of the U.S. against Canada’s attack led by Sarah Fillier and Sarah Nurse, but it is the goaltending that will be key on Sunday. The U.S. Aerin Frankel has the best save percentage in the tournament, while Ann Renee-Desbiens has been their bread and butter over the last number of years for Canada.
Canada is 6-2 in Gold Medal Games on home ice, including that dramatic overtime win in Calgary two years ago.
