Lincoln, ON – (June 1, 2023) – This statement is a response to a recent incident in which the Pride flag that had been raised at Trinity United Church within the community of Lincoln, Ontario was removed and damaged.
The Town of Lincoln severely admonishes this action which runs contrary to the Town’s values espousing diversity, equity and inclusivity in all of our programs, services and activities, as well as Council’s strategic priority of being a Welcoming Community: an environment that is open to fresh ideas and new perspectives; where residents and businesses participate fully in the social, cultural and economic life of the Town; and where people and businesses discover and identify our community as a desirable place to grow, prosper, and belong.
Earlier this week, Council took the following actions demonstrating full support of Pride month:
At the Town of Lincoln Council meeting on May 29, Mayor Sandra Easton officially proclaimed June 2023 as Pride Month. On May 29, 2023, the Pride flag was raised at Town Hall in cooperation with Pride Niagara.Social media posts were posted on corporate Town of Lincoln accounts celebrating Pride Month and sharing images of the flag raising.We continue to work with our partners at Pride Niagara to promote and acknowledge the contributions of the LGBTQ2S+ community in Lincoln, in the region of Niagara and across Canada.
We encourage anyone who has knowledge of the recent incident at Trinity United Church or of the suspects to reach out to Niagara Regional Police Service who are conducting an investigation.
