In honour of Pride Month, the Town of Kirkland Lake will fly the intersex-inclusive progress Pride flag at town hall in June.

A press release from the municipality states the town honours those in the community who have fought to achieve equality and acceptance, and those who continue that effort today.

Kirkland Lake is home to a vibrant and proud LGBTQIA2S+ community whose countless contributions are building a more inclusive environment for all.

The release reads: “The Pride flag is a symbol of support for our community, of the character of the town and its leaders and a reminder to the community at large that regardless of how you identify or who you love, you are safe, valued, and welcome in our community.

Mayor Stacy Wight said, “Pride Month allows us to recognize the value of diversity, while also supporting human rights.

“It’s a time to show our fellow residents why civility and respect are this community’s cornerstones. Kirkland Lake is a place where people are accepted for who they are, regardless of culture, identity, or language.”

The release goes on to note Pride Month brings Kirkland Lakers together to celebrate the history, courage and diversity of Kirkland Lake’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Intersex, Queer, Questioning, and Two Spirit (LGBTQIA2S+).

Residents are encouraged to reach out, connect to support each other, and celebrate together.

The Town of Kirkland Lake is committed to addressing the unique challenges facing the LGBTQIA2S+ and to build a more inclusive and equitable town.

It recognizes LGBTQIA2S+ communities comprise some of the most marginalized and vulnerable populations, and that the last few years have had a tremendous impact on the mental/physical health and financial well-being of many, particularly trans people, as well as Black, Indigenous and racialized members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, because of their intersectional identities.
