The exhilarating performance ended with the GUTS singer shoving cake into her face and sticking out her tongue at the audience

After a cold open poking fun at Congress’ bonkers antisemitism hearing and Adam Driver delivering a piano-driven serenade during his monologue that took shots at Tesla Cybertruck buyers, Saturday Night Live musical guest Olivia Rodrigo flexed her own piano (and vocal) skills with a twinkling-the-ivories rendition of her hit single “vampire.”

The Rolling Stone cover star exhibited her delicate-yet-powerful vocals during the slow-burning piano-serenade version of the tune:

“I used to think I was smart/But you’ve made me look so naïve/The way you sold me for parts/As you sunk your teeth into me, oh/Bloodsucker, fame-fucker/Bleedin’ me dry, like a goddamn vampire,” she sang, her voice cracking with emotion.

The performance marked Rodrigo’s second time as Saturday Night Live’s musical guest and came in the wake of her smash-hit sophomore album GUTS, which was named Rolling Stone’s fifth best album of 2023 and was nominated for a pair of Grammy Awards: Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.

In her Rolling Stone cover story, Rodrigo opened up about the making of GUTS and how she wanted it to be more lighthearted than her debut Sour, which was more of a somber breakup album about her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett.

“Our goal was to make something a little more playful, a record that didn’t take itself so seriously,” says Rodrigo. “The last album was definitely a breakup record, much to my chagrin… I was really trying to make it not that, but that’s what it was. I’m feeling a lot happier these days. Everything’s pretty good. So I wasn’t going to make something super devastating, a record of ballads.”

Later on, Rodrigo returned for a performance of her pop-rock banger “all-american bitch,” that saw the singer don a pink dress and wail its lyrics while trashing a fancy dinner table decorated with pastries and jamming a knife into a cake.

“Forgive and I forget/I know my age and I act like it/Got what you can’t resist/I’m a perfect all-American,” she sang.

She ended things by wailing into the mic while smashing cake into her face, smudging the aforementioned pink dress, and sticking her tongue out at the audience. Outstanding stuff.
