After McDonald’s announced it will start selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts across the United States, the fast-food chain said the arrangement won’t be coming to Canada.

The McDonald’s-Krispy Kreme deal in the U.S. comes after a “successful test” at more than 160 McDonald’s restaurants in Kentucky and Indiana, the two companies said, with Krispy Kreme doughnuts to be sold under the golden arches by the end of 2026.

However, McDonald’s confirmed the pairing will not extend north of the border. “McDonald’s Canada will not be offering the Krispy Kreme doughnuts at this time,” the fast-food chain said in a written statement issued to Postmedia.

The McDonald’s-Krispy Kreme partnership bolsters the list of fast-food chains teaming up with snack makers. Wendy’s and Cinnabon introduced a new dessert in February, while Subway partnered with Cinnabon and Auntie Anne’s to add new snacks to its menu in January.

The Wendy’s and Cinnabon pairing is available in Canada, while the Subway collaboration with Cinnabon and Auntie Anne’s is only available in the U.S.

McDonald’s has about 13,500 U.S. locations, with Krispy Kreme chief executive Josh Charlesworth telling investors last month the company could serve 6,000 McDonald’s restaurants with its existing supply chain network.

McDonald’s Canada has about 1,400 locations while Krispy Kreme has 14 Canadian stores.

Earlier this year, Krispy Kreme announced more details about its planned Canadian expansion, with a Calgary store expected to open in 2025.

“We are still in the permitting process for the Calgary location and do not have a specific timeline at the moment,” said Levi Hetrick, chief growth officer and operating partner of Krispy Kreme Canada.

“We are targeting the first half of 2025 for an opening, but that may change depending on permit review.”

Hetrick said the brand is also working on opening stores in Edmonton, Hamilton, Ont., and Laval, Que., in addition to scoping out drive-thru locations.
