One of the most surprising stories in English football hopes to continue its impressive run in the current FA Cup season, as Wrexham prepares to host Sheffield United in the fourth round on Sunday.

While the popularity of the Wrexham football club might have something to do with their A-list owners, the squad on the pitch has made a name for itself this season, thanks to some impressive play. The Welsh club comes out of the National League, the fifth tier in English football. In league action, Wrexham is tied for first with Notts County (whoever finishes first receives automatic promotion). This season, in FA Cup play, Wrexham had to get through qualifying to even play in the tournament. After picking up a pair of impressive wins in the first two rounds, they really gained some notoriety by taking down EFL Championship squad Coventry City, to make it to the fourth round for the first time since 2000. In fact, Wrexham is the only National League club remaining in the competition. They have been led by “Super” Paul Mullin, who leads the FA Cup with six goals.

The team trying to burst Wrexham’s bubble is a club poised to make the jump to the Premier League. In the Championship table, Sheffield United sits in second place with 57 points, five back of league-leading Burnley, with 13 points separating them from third-place Watford. Sheffield is two years removed from back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in the FA Cup, prior to falling in the third round last season. This will be the second road contest for Sheffield United, as they opened up their season with a 2-0 win in the third round against Millwall back on Jan. 7.

This will be the first meeting between the two clubs since 2004, and the second ever in FA Cup competition. Sheffield is 4-3-3 all-time against Wrexham, including a 5-1 win over the Welsh team back in the first round of the 1983-84 season.
