The talk coming into the World Juniors was more about the players Canada didn’t add to the roster than about the ones they did. There are a lot of high-drafted players from the summer’s NHL draft who aren’t on the team, a squad filled with many of the players who fell in the quarter-finals last year. For Montreal Canadiens fans, Michael Hage, who is tied for eighth in the NCAA with 10 goals in his freshman season, is one such player who can only watch his peers this year. It is still a strong team that Canada brings despite the controversial roster decisions, and one joining Team USA as favourites in the tournament.
This year’s host starts things off at the 2025 event with a game against Finland, the second year in a row that these two teams meet on the first day. Finland is always a tough opponent on the international stage with the complete game its young players are instilled with.
In the end, Finland had a better tournament by finishing fourth last year while Canada was eliminated before the medal round. Both teams want to perform much better by claiming medals this time around.
