A 22-point second quarter powered the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 35-33 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Sunday’s Labour Day Classic in front of 33,861 fans at Mosaic Stadium in Regina in Week 13 of the CFL season.

With the win, Winnipeg (6-6) takes possession of the top spot in the West Division. The Riders — who are now winless in six games — drop to 5-6-1 on the year, which puts them in third place behind the B.C. Lions (6-6), who beat the Ottawa Redblacks on Saturday.

The Bombers opened the scoring in the first quarter.

After Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros threw a 45-yard pass to Ontaria Wilson, short-yardage quarterback Chris Streveler plunged in from three yards out a few plays later to make it 7-0 Bombers with the convert.

Saskatchewan tied the game 7-7 on their next drive as quarterback Trevor Harris marched the Riders 68-yards down the field on 11 plays capped off by a 12-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Bane Jr.

In the second quarter, after Collaros was intercepted by Riders’ defensive back Marcus Sayles on Winnipeg’s 41-yard line, Saskatchewan turned that into points as Harris threw an 18-yard touchdown strike to Dohnte Meyers to make it 14-7 with the convert.

On Winnipeg’s next drive, the Bombers answered back as Collaros threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Nic Demski to make it 14-14 with the convert.

The Bombers scored a rouge on the ensuing kickoff to go up 15-14.

Winnipeg punted on their next drive, but Riders’ returner Mario Alford couldn’t handle the bounce on the kick and the loose ball was recovered in the end zone by Bombers defensive back Nick Hallett for the touchdown.

With the convert, Winnipeg went up 22-14.

Minutes later, the Bombers added to their lead after a pair of penalties on the same play against the Riders.

Saskatchewan was called for pass interference in the end zone, while Riders’ defensive lineman Miles Brown was called for roughing the passer after delivering a high hit on Collaros, who did not return to action after the hit.

After the penalties put Winnipeg on the one-yard line, Streveler punched in his second touchdown of the game to put the Bombers up 29-14 with the convert.

In the third quarter, Brett Lauther nailed a 55-yard field goal for the Riders to cut the lead to 29-17 before adding another field goal from 25 yards out on Saskatchewan’s next drive to make it 29-20.

On Winnipeg’s next drive, Sergio Castillo made a 52-yard field to restore the Bombers’ 12-point lead through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, after connecting with Meyers for a 27-yard gain, Harris threw his next four passes to KeeSean Johnson — with the fourth being a five-yard touchdown strike — as Saskatchewan made it 32-27 with the convert.

With 1:52 left, Castillo kicked a 56-yard field goal to put Winnipeg up 35-27.

Needing a touchdown and two-point convert to tie, the Riders’ offence put together five first downs before Harris hit Samuel Emilus for a 26-yard gain to Winnipeg’s one-yard line before Harris plunged in from one-yard out for the touchdown to make it 35-33 with 14 seconds left.

But on the two-point convert, Harris’ pass was knocked down by Bombers’ linebacker Tony Jones.

With 14 seconds left, Lauther’s on-side kick was recovered by Saskatchewan, giving the Riders another chance to complete the comeback.

After a pass interference call against Winnipeg, Lauther was left with a 60-yard field goal attempt for the win but the kick fell short as time expired.

Next week, these two teams will meet again as the Riders visit Winnipeg on Saturday (1 p.m., TSN, CTV).

More to come…
