Two B.C. Ferries sailings cancelled as wind warning issued

Gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour are expected around Greater Victoria and the southern Gulf Islands.

High winds in the Strait of Georgia led to the cancellation of two Wednesday ferry sailings and put two more at risk of cancellation.

B.C. Ferries said the 10 a.m. sailing from Tsawwassen and the noon sailing from Swartz Bay were called off, but the possible cancellation of the 2 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen and the 4 p.m. was avoided due to improved conditions.

The news about ferry travel came after Environment Canada issued a wind warning for Greater Victoria and the southern Gulf Islands, with gusts up to 90 kilometres an hour on or near the water expected.

The winds eased through the day.

The corporation said people could consider using the Tsawwassen-Duke Point route instead to get to and from the Island if faced with a cancellation.

Conditions could lead to power outages and falling tree branches, the warning said.
