Police are investigating the sudden death of a 19-year-old woman found dead inside a Halifax Walmart’s walk-in oven over the weekend.
On Monday, Halifax Regional Police (HRP) responded to a call at Walmart, located at 6990 Mumford Rd., around 9:30 p.m. local time, according to a news release.
Upon arrival, police located a woman inside of a large walk-in oven belonging to the store’s bakery department.
Police have not said whether they believe the circumstances of the woman’s death were criminal in nature. The matter is still under investigation, and the cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
Walmart Communications Manager Amanda Moss says the Halifax store will remain closed until further notice.
“We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family. Our focus remains on taking care of our associates and making sure they have the support they need,” Moss told Now Toronto in an email statement on Tuesday.
The HRP has described the investigation as “complex,” and says it involves several partner agencies. The investigation may take a while to be completed, and police warn the public to be cautious of posting sensitive information on social media that could upset loved ones of the victim during that time.
“An investigation of this nature may take a significant amount of time,” HRP said in a post on X.
“We urge the public to be mindful of sharing speculative information on social media. Please be aware of the impacts that speculation could have on family, colleagues and loved ones of the woman.”
