He beats out Steve Pecher, who started in central defense for the USA in a World Cup qualifying playoff with Canada on Dec. 22, 1976 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Captaining the team for the third time tonight, goalkeeper Matt Turner starts his seventh knockout round match. The 29-year-old is 5-1-0 in knockout round contests, recording five clean sheets along the way. One of those shutouts includes the 2-0 win against Canada in last month’s Concacaf Nations League Final in Las Vegas. Julian Gressel earns his first start in official competition and second start overall. Gressel also started his debut on Jan. 25, 2023 against Serbia.
