When Quelle Chris uttered the famous words "One delivered the cut . . ." in his piano-backed ballad "Graphic Bleed Outs," he may as well have been talking about golf's major tournaments as well.

For as enjoyable as major competitions can be, they can also prove quite stressful for the competitors, particularly those who are on the cusp of the cut line.

This year's U.S. Open has been spotlighted by low scores. Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele posted record scores in the opening round. Matthieu Pavon and Sam Burns sank aces, both on the 15th hole.

And yet the real action is at the equator. Big-name players are at risk of missing out on the weekend festivities. Many of them have fared well in prior tournaments.

U.S. Open cut rules

The top 60 players in the U.S. Open field (plus ties) after two rounds advance to the third and fourth rounds of the tournament.

Among the four major tournaments, only the Masters Tournament carries a stricter cut line (top 50 players, plus ties). The Open Championship and PGA Championship each accept the top 70 players in the field (plus ties).

U.S. Open cut line 2023

The cut line at the 2023 U.S. Open at the start of the second round was 1 over par. Players enjoyed a low-scoring run through one round, although there's still plenty of time for things to change.
