Zuffa LLC via Getty ImagesThe UFC is at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, for tonight’s UFC 302 pay-per-view card. In the main event, UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev looks to defend his title against former interim champion Dustin Poirier. In the evening’s co-headlining contest, ex-UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland meets former title challenger Paulo Costa.
The main card for UFC 302 streams on ESPN+ PPV following prelims on ESPN2 and early prelims on ESPN+.
Dustin Poirier has attempted to win undisputed UFC lightweight gold on two previous occasions. He failed in those efforts, losing to Charles Oliveira and Khabib Nurmagomedov via submission. Islam Makhachev has two successful UFC lightweight title defenses on his record. Both those wins came against former UFC 145-pound champion Alexander Volkanovski. UFC 302 marks Makhachev’s first title defense against a “true” 155-pound challenger.
Makhachev holds the UFC record for longest active winning streak at 13 fights. If he defeats Poirier, Makhachev joins Anderson Silva and Kamaru Usman as the only fighters to win 14 or more fights in a row while competing for the UFC. Poirier enters UFC 302 as the No. 4 fighter in the official UFC lightweight rankings.
Sean Strickland held the UFC middleweight title from September 2023 through January 2024. He lost the belt in his first title defense, dropping a split decision to Dricus du Plessis. Paulo Costa is coming off a February 2024 decision loss to ex-UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker.
Strickland is ranked No. 1 in the UFC middleweight division ahead of UFC 302. Costa checks in at No. 7.
UFC 302 results, winners and losers will be updated live throughout tonight’s pay-per-view card.
