TTC strike

As Torontonians brace for a possible TTC strike on Friday, many outside the GTA — who also rely on transit to catch a game, play or show — will also be impacted.

Here's what you need to know:

• A potential strike can start Friday, June 7 at midnight, for workers with the ATU Local 113.

• A walkout by the TTC’s approximate 11,500 operators, collectors, maintenance workers, station staff and other front-line employees could mean a full shutdown of Toronto’s bus, streetcar and subway network. However, it does not mean there will automatically be a labour disruption Friday; it only indicates the earliest date such a disruption could begin.

• It's the first time there's been talk of a strike in 16 years. In 2008, the strike only lasted a weekend before the Ontario Liberals passed legislation ordering TTC staff back to work.

• In 2023, the Superior Court of Justice ruled the legislation violated workers’ charter rights.

• The current contract for TTC staff with that union expired on March 31.

• The TTC service takes patrons on almost 2.5 million trips each weekday.

• For tourists commuting downtown Toronto, GO Transit would still be an option should a strike occur. Check the schedule for a stop near you, and fare price at gotransit.com. Be aware there some parking and schedule changes at some locations over the next few weeks as GO Transit does repair work. And also be aware if there is a strike, there could be picket lines near Union Station.

• For those willing to drive to downtown Toronto, the city has a list of parking locations with its Green P Parking, including sites with electric vehicle charging spots. Visit parking.greenp.com.

• Other options could include a ride-booking service like Uber or Lyft, but the cost may be prohibitive for some.

• The City of Toronto is also prepared for a potential strike, but has not shared its contingency plan, as contract negotiations continue this week.
