Young trick-or-treaters seeking a safe alternative to wandering dark streets for Halloween can get their loot bags filled under the careful watch of Coquitlam RCMP at Buchanan Square (3000 Guildford Way) from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. today, Oct. 31.
The detachment is hosting its second Halloween Trick or Treat Party, along with special guests from Coquitlam Fire, Metro Vancouver Transit Police, the gang prevention unit, ICBC Roadside and Coquitlam Bylaws.
They’ll have decorated tents, specialty vehicles to show off as well as candy and swag to distribute to little ghosts and ghouls.
The event is the brainchild of Const. Sandra Morse who was on general duty on Halloween in 2021 and decided it might be more fun to be able to engage with trick or treaters in a more inviting, safe way.
She was able to put her plan in motion last year after she was transferred to the detachment’s community response team.
Morse said nine different agencies responded to her invitation to get involved and more than 500 kids showed up to the first Halloween party.
That, she said, “was much more than expected. We even had to run out and get more candy halfway through.”
As well, trick or treaters will have the opportunity to give back as the SHARE society will also be on hand to accept donations for its food bank.
