Trick-or-Treat with a twist: MCS holds food drive as part of ...
Midale Central School is practicing generosity this year as part of their Halloween festivities by doing a ‘Trick or Treat for Hunger’ on Thursday afternoon. Jessica McNabb, grade 2-3 teacher and organizer of the event, says the idea is rooted in their vision for the school.
“One of the things that we highlighted that was important to us is teaching mindfulness, and we're also giving some real-world examples of how we can be mindful of others. We wanted to do something as a whole school where we could put that into action. It is something that we had done in the past, years ago, and it went really well.”
The students will be heading out to their assigned streets around 2:15 p.m. on Halloween with an adult supervisor.
“They're going house to house, just asking for non-perishable food items that they can collect, and that we can donate to the Weyburn Salvation Army food bank. We are putting it out to the town just ahead of time, just so that everyone knows, so that if they're not home, they can set a bag or a box of items out for the kids to pick up, and if they want to make sure that the kids make it to their place, they can call the school and register their house just to make sure that we get there.”
They are also asking the community for wagons to borrow to carry the donations, which would be returned by the end of the day.
McNabb says alongside making a positive impact, it’ll be a fun experience for students and the community.
“It's just a nice activity to bring the whole school together and to bring them out into the community a little bit, and also to let them wear their costumes and be outside and enjoy the nice weather that we're having lately. I think it'll be a great way for them to show off their costumes and have a little bit more Halloween fun with those.”
