Federal weather watchers have issued a heads up for eastern Ontario.

The most serious caution is for Petawawa, Pembroke and Cobden where Environment Canada has issued a tornado watch.

‘Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into the evening,” the agency said in a release Thursday.”

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes. Strong winds, large hail and heavy rain are also possible.”

The storms could also bring strong winds gusting to 110 km/h and “nickel to toonie size hail.”

The report is a little less dramatic for the Ottawa region, where the forecast Thursday morning was for Increasing cloudiness near noon.

There’s a 60-per-cent chance of rain Thursday then a 60 per-cent-chance of showers in the afternoon.

There’s risk of a thunderstorm Thursday afternoon with the wind gusting to 50 km/h in the afternoon.

Thursday’s high is forecast at 26 C, with high humidex readings pushing the “feels like” level to 30.

Friday is expected to be mainly cloudy, with possible showers and/or thunderstorms in the afternoon.

The high is expected to be about 23 C.

Tonight A few showers or thunderstorms ending near midnight then mainly cloudy with 30 per cent chance of showers.

The storm system is expected to move out late Friday,

Saturday’s forecast is for a high of 23 C under clear skies.

The low should plunge to 11 C.
