Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that could produce dangerous weather in central Alberta.

An Alberta Emergency Alert notifying a critical weather warning was issued for several communities in the region Wednesday evening.

The alert says baseball-sized hail — or larger — is also possible.

"This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation," reads the alert.

The alert says "extra care and attention" should be exercised in and around communities such as Clive, Alix, Eckville and Lacombe.

As of 8:17 p.m., the alert has been issued for the following eight affected areas:

Lacombe County Birchcliff Bentley Gull Lake Blackfalds Lacombe Clive Alix

The warning, first issued at 7:12 p.m., originally included a critical tornado warning, noting damaging winds locally could be possible.

Residents are advised to take cover if threatening weather approaches, or if they see a funnel cloud or swirling debris.

The agency recommends going indoors and staying on the lowest floor, away from outside walls or windows.
