ONTARIO - The Ontario Mining Association (OMA) has hired Priya Tandon as its new president.

A provincial trade organization advocating for Ontario’s mining sector, the group announced that, effective Oct. 7, Tandon has replaced Chris Hodgson, who served as president for 20 years.

The OMA noted that Tandon is the first woman to serve in the role of president.

“Priya is an accomplished leader with over 15 years of experience in the public sector, known for her expertise in policy development, stakeholder engagement, and building strong, collaborative relationships,” Frank Demers, director of Ontario Mines at Vale and chair of the OMA board of directors, in an Oct. 28 news release.

“Priya’s innovative approach, strong analytical skills, and dedication to fostering inclusive and effective policies have made her a highly respected figure in the industry. As president of the OMA, she will bring her visionary leadership to further the association’s mission of advancing Ontario’s mining sector in a sustainable and responsible manner.”

Tandon holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto, a master’s degree in engineering and public policy from McMaster University, and has more than 15 years of experience in public service. Before taking on her new role, Tandon had served as director of strategic and Indigenous policy at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry since 2020.

“Amid a changing geopolitical, economic, regulatory and societal landscape, Ontario mining is retooling and mobilizing the resources it needs to be a key contributor to sustainable growth and the global energy transition,” Tandon said in the release.

“This is a time of opportunity, innovation and forging strong relationships, and I am excited to be part of shaping the mining industry of tomorrow.”

The OMA was established in 1920 and is one of the longest-serving trade organizations in Canada.
