Tate McRae has taken hockey by storm and will appear at the 2024 ...

Tate McRae

Tate McRae has been making a name for herself in the music industry. Now her history in hockey and her embrace of sport has netted the 20-year-old singer/songwriter an invite to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game.

Saturday, McRae will serve as a celebrity co-captain for Team MacKinnon during the All-Star Game and will perform during the event’s second intermission.

So who is she?

McRae, who hails from Calgary, Alberta, got her start as a competitive dancer and placed third in “So You Think You Can Dance?” in 2016. She trained at the prestigious Alberta Ballet, and placed third in the worlds largest student dance competition, the Grand Prix. Amid her dance career, McRae had a choreography YouTube channel, but when her camera broke and she lost dance footage, she decided up upload a videos of her singing, including this early one, which has over a million views.

Her first hit single started from a TikTok song titled “You Broke Me First,” which was blasted in the bedrooms of teenage girls all over America. The title was her first song to hit the charts, sitting as high as 17th on the Billboard Hot 100. McRae was 18 at the time of the release but has changed up the tone of her music from sad-girl to pop.

The artist is a textbook example of using social media to showcase talent, and YouTube and TikTok were core building blocks of her music career, where her success led her to release her second studio album “Think Later” in December. PopFiltr says her album had 677 million plays on December 24, following its December 8 release date.

Since then, hockey paraphernalia has worked its way into many of her photoshoots.

Her most recent album cover, where she is posed (incorrectly) wearing blue and white hockey pads with the lettering saying “Think Later.”

Hockey fans had much to say about the incorrect placement and wrong size of the pads, you would think someone would have caught that.

On her 2022 world tour, the Canuck famously (or infamously, depending on who you ask) wore a single hockey glove during every show.

“Everyone asks why I wear it on tour and in my music videos,” McRae said about the lone glove to W Magazine. “My family was a very motivated and sporty family, so hockey was a big deal to us. My brother plays hockey and I’m Canadian so I have to like it.”

Her brother, Tucker, plays on the Dartmouth’s mens hockey team, where he finished second on the team in blocked shots his freshman season in 2022-23. She appeared at one of his games in New Hampshire and was spotted cheering him on in late December.

The familial history and her love for hockey played a big role in her on stage choices.

“What we did was, on tour, I wore a single hockey glove, which some people did not like, and some people liked,” McRae added. “I thought it was cool.”

In the music video of her hit single “Greedy,” McRae is seen driving a Zamboni in an empty small hockey rink, supposedly an ode to her hometown. “Greedy” was McRae’s first song to hit Spotify’s Global Top-10 chart with over 662 million plays.

The singer was seen at a Calgary Flames game in December, where the team honored her homecoming by gifting her a “McRae” jersey. The number on the jersey was eight, which we wholeheartedly support.

McRae is the ex-girlfriend of Columbus Blue Jacket Cole Sillinger. The two separated in late 2023 and fans surmise that the break up may have played a part in her album cover. But Sillinger is a center, so the jury is out on that one.

McRae will get to showcase both her talent and her love for the sport at the All-Star game.
