LANDOVER, MD -- One of the marquee games on a busy Sunday in the NFL sees two surprising teams meet up near the nation’s capital, as the Washington Commanders host the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Prior to the 2024 season, few would have predicted that a matchup between the Commanders and Steelers would have significance in a pair of division championship races. However, thanks to both teams finding ways to win thus far, this has the makings of a fantastic battle between a tough-as-nails defense and a high-flying offense.

The Steelers are coming off their bye week, which saw them pick up steam behind Russell Wilson at quarterback. The team averaged over 30 points in wins over the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets and New York Giants, giving Pittsburgh loads of momentum heading into the break. The Steelers have also not allowed over 20 points in the last four games, showing Mike Tomlin’s defense is still tough to beat.

Pittsburgh is first in the AFC North, a half-game up on the Baltimore Ravens.

That will be the challenge for rookie Jayden Daniels, as he and the Commander’s offense have not quite been on the 35-points-per-game average they were on during their their four-game win streak earlier this season. However, grit and a solid play on the defensive side of the ball have led to Washington winning three straight games, inching them closer to a potential playoff berth.

The Commanders are first in the NFC East, leading the Philadelphia Eagles by a half-game.

The two storied franchises have met 79 times, with Washington leading Pittsburgh 43-33-3.

MY PICK: Steelers win, 24-21
