Severe thunderstorm watch

Storms are expected later this afternoon or early evening and could produce 100 km/hr winds and hail

Cambridge could be in for some turbulent weather this afternoon.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the region and says conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain.

Storms are expected later this afternoon or early this evening and could be accompanied by gusts up to 100 km/h, heavy downpours and nickel-sized hail, the agency says.

The scattered thunderstorms are expected to push into the region with a cold front later today.

Residents are advised to secure loose objects as strong wind gusts can toss them, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.

When severe weather arrives, residents should take cover immediately.

Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
