A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Calgary as meteorologists track storms moving through southern Alberta from the south that could bring strong wind and hail.

The advisory from Environment Canada (ECCC) says storms are moving north from the BC border at 70 km/h.

“Winds may arrive well ahead of the actual thunderstorms,” reads the warning, adding that wind gusts may be strong enough to toss loose objects and damage weak buildings.

“Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches,” says ECCC meteorologists.

A few communities have lost power in the western part of the city, according to Enmax. The company shows an outage that began in the Coach Hill, Patterson, Cougar Ridge and Bowness area that began around 10:30 p.m.

The estimated restoration time for the outage is 12:30 a.m. More information can be found here.

Some Calgarians are still dealing with the aftermath of a severe thunderstorm that rolled through the north part of the city in early August, bringing baseball-sized hail that left a mark on houses and vehicles.
