Rapid Recap: Seahawks defeat Bears on Thursday Night Football
In a game that featured 13 punts and no touchdowns, the Bears lost to the Seahawks 6-3 Thursday night at Soldier Field. Here's what transpired in the home finale:
First half
The Seahawks took a 3-0 lead on the game's opening possession on Jason Myers' 27-yard field goal, capping an 11-play, 71-yard drive.
The Bears tied the score 3-3 on Cairo Santos' 42-yard field goal with 2:32 remaining in the first half. The 13-play, 67-yard drive was highlighted by screen passes from Caleb Williams to D'Andre Swift for 24 yards on third-and-7 and to DJ Moore for 18 yards on third-and-9. Another key play on the drive came when Williams fielded a bouncing shotgun snap like a shortstop and flipped the ball to Keenan Allen for a 16-yard gain.
Williams followed by sprinting to his left and rifling an apparent 17-yard touchdown pass to Rome Odunze. But the play was nullified by a holding penalty on left guard Jake Curhan, who started in place of the injured Teven Jenkins.
The Seahawks retook a 6-3 lead on Myers' 50-yard field goal with :21 left in the half.
Second half
Late in the third quarter, Kyler Gordon ripped the ball away from tight end Pharoah Brown at the Bears' 38 after a 4-yard gain. Although players from both teams thought the play was dead, Gordon returned it to the end zone and was awarded a touchdown. But after a replay review, he was ruled down by contact at the 38.
However, the Bears were forced to punt on their ensuing possession.
Late in the game on fourth-and-3 from their own 34, Williams retreated from three defenders and connected with Moore for a 14-yard gain.
But on fourth-and-10 from the Seahawks' 40, Williams' jump ball intended for Allen was intercepted by cornerback Riq Woolen at the 22 with :11 remaining.
Statistically speaking
Williams completed 16 of 28 passes for 122 yards and a 53.0 passer rating and rushed for 37 yards on five carries. His streak without an interception ended on the Bears' final play after it had reached 353 pass attempts dating back to Week 6.
Swift led the Bears in rushing with 53 yards on 12 attempts.
The Bears defense held the Seahawks to 265 total yards and 12 first downs.
"This morning in the team meeting I asked all three phases to play their best together at one time," interim head coach Thomas Brown said. "I thought special teams played extremely well. I thought the defense played their butts off the entire night. And the offense was not good enough, which starts with me as far as the game plan that I had coming into this game, having those guys ready to go. We had plenty of opportunities to win it."
Up next
The Bears will close the season next weekend against the Packers in Green Bay. The date and time of the game will be announced Sunday night.
