While Saskatchewan was in the game until the final minute, the Riders started slowly as Winnipeg’s Willie Jefferson blocked Adam Korsak’s punt on Saskatchewan’s first series giving the Bombers good field position, which led to a field goal to open the game.

On Saskatchewan’s second series, receiver KeeSean Johnson slipped on his route and quarterback Trevor Harris was intercepted by Bombers defensive back Tyrell Ford, allowing Winnipeg’s offence to come back onto the field.

This time, the Bombers found the end zone on their drive as short-yardage quarterback Chris Streveler plunged in from two yards out to put Winnipeg up 10-0.

The Riders tried to get some momentum back as Harris connected with Samuel Emilus for a 52-yard gain to Winnipeg’s nine-yard line.

From there, Harris found Johnson in the end zone for the touchdown to cut the lead to 10-7 with the convert. For Johnson, it was his fourth straight game with a touchdown reception.

In the second quarter, Winnipeg’s Sergio Castillo kicked a 26-yard field goal to go up 13-7 before Saskatchewan’s Brett Lauther nailed a kick from 50 yards to make it 13-10.

After connecting with Kian Schaffer-Baker for an 81-yard catch and run on the opening drive of the third quarter, Harris found Emilus for an eight-yard touchdown strike as Saskatchewan took a 17-13 lead with the convert.

Winnipeg kicked a field goal to cut the lead to 17-16 before Saskatchewan scored on a punt single to make it 18-16.

Moments later, the game heated up as Riders’ defensive lineman Miles Brown was called for roughing the passer as he tackled Streveler on what officials deemed a low hit.

It was the second time in two games Brown was called for the infraction after hitting Collaros high in the Labour Day Classic.

After the penalty gave the Bombers a first down, Winnipeg marched down to score as Collaros found Kenny Lawler in the end zone to put the Bombers up 23-18.

Saskatchewan responded with a 35-yard field goal by Lauther with eight minutes left to make it 23-21.

With three minutes to go, the Bombers converted a third-down gamble to keep possession and eat up the clock before Castillo kicked a 39-yard field goal to put Winnipeg up by five with 1:05 remaining.
