Real Madrid used social media and its official website on Sunday morning, to confirm two injuries to a duo of first team stars.

Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr. both pulled up injured in Saturday's 2-0 win over Villarreal at the Bernabeu, with that development souring what should have otherwise been celebrated as Carlo Ancelotti's side drawing level on points with bitter rivals FC Barcelona at the La Liga summit.

After the Ballon d'Or candidate was brought off the pitch crying on a stretcher, Ancelotti remarked post-match that right back Carvajal seemed to have suffered a "quite serious" knee injury.

"We are going to wait for the medical evaluation. The doctor said that he has a knee injury but we have to wait to do tests. Hopefully it will be as minor as possible," said the Italian.

"The dressing room is sad and worried, just like Dani. He is a very, very important player for us, fundamental for his experience, seriousness, professionalism. We are going to wait," Ancelotti added.

Vinicius Jr. was also brought off prematurely, with Ancelotti saying that the Brazilian was "very hurt" while set to undergo tests on Sunday morning.

With tests on both men now carried out, Madrid has released a pair of statements.

"After the tests carried out on our player Dani Carvajal by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, a rupture of the external collateral ligament and a rupture of the popliteal tendon in his right leg. He will be operated on in the coming days," the club first said about Carvajal.

There was less to explain about Vinicius who "has been diagnosed with a cervical injury" and should miss Brazil's upcoming matches against Chile and Peru.

As for Carvajal, he is expected to be out for the rest of the ongoing 2024/2025 season, and possibly up to a year, yet vowed to come back stronger than ever.

"A serious cruciate ligament injury has been confirmed, I will have to undergo surgery and be off the pitch for a few months," he wrote on social media.

"I'm already looking forward to starting the recovery and coming back like a beast. Thank you all very much for your messages, I feel very loved," the Euro 2024 winner with Spain signed off.
