The veteran midfielder was introduced shortly after the hour mark and needed just three minutes to make an impact, setting up what proved to be the winning goal for Vinicius Junior.

At 39 years and 40 days old, Modric became the oldest player to even represent Madrid, breaking the record held by the legendary Ferenc Puskas.

Modric will continue to break his own record over the course of the season. His contract expires in June, three months before he will celebrate his 40th birthday.

"When he starts, when he comes off the bench... he always helps us," manager Carlo Ancelotti said after the game. "He came on at a difficult moment in the match and changed the game. It's a pleasure to coach him as a player and as a person.

"There is not much to add. He is a fantastic footballer and he still is. An extraordinary professional. A calm man, but with character. Real Madrid have been lucky to have this player."

Reports suggest Modric will depart Madrid at the end of the season, although the Croatia international remains a regular part of Ancelotti's starting lineup. He has already started five times in La Liga this season, following on from 18 starts last year.
