Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) mourns the loss of legendary Ray St. Germain, a cherished Citizen of the Red River Métis community and a renowned musician who touched the hearts of many with his talent and passion.
"It is with a profound sense of loss that I announce the passing of one of our legends, Ray St. Germain," said David Chartrand, President of the MMF, and friend of Ray. "He graced television screens and the auditoriums alike, sharing his love of music far and wide. His voice was known around the world, but his heart belonged to the Red River Métis people. He took immense pride in promoting our history, our stories, and our culture, weaving them into his music and sharing our pride with the world. The Red River Métis government and our Citizens will forever cherish Ray St. Germain. His timeless contributions to the Métis Hour x2 radio show reached tens of thousands, bringing joy to listeners around the globe."
Throughout his remarkable career, St. Germain used his platform to celebrate and promote Red River Métis culture. His iconic song "I'm Mighty Proud I'm Métis," first released in 1973, became an anthem for the Red River Métis Nation, embodying their resilience and spirit. The song "The Métis" earned him an Aboriginal Order of Canada.
Naomi Clarke, a dear friend and colleague who co-hosted Métis Hour x2 with St. Germain for 20+ years, shared her heartfelt condolences: "Ray was not only an incredibly talented artist but also a kind and generous soul. He was a mentor to many, and his passion for his Métis heritage was truly inspiring. We have lost a dear friend and a true champion of Métis culture."
St. Germain's pride in his Métis heritage was evident in every aspect of his life and work. He tirelessly advocated for Métis rights and recognition, and his music served as a powerful tool for cultural revitalization and empowerment.
Ray St. Germain's deep-rooted faith was a guiding light in his life and music. This was evident in his moving gospel songs, where he expressed his devotion and shared messages of hope and inspiration. His music touched countless hearts, offering solace and strength through his heartfelt interpretations of classic gospel hymns and original compositions. With over 500 television shows under his belt, he recently had a street named after him: "Big Sky Country Way," a tribute to one of his TV shows.
"Ray St. Germain was one of our Nation's treasures, a true legend in his own right," said President Chartrand. "His music resonated with Métis people across the land, capturing our stories, our struggles, and our unwavering pride in our identity. May you have a swift journey to your new home, dear friend.
