When Kensington Palace announced that Kate Middleton had undergone abdominal surgery and would be unable to perform public duties for months, one of the first things they made clear was that Prince William would also be modifying his work timetable to care for his wife and children. And today, a Palace official has shared with T&C that the Prince of Wales will be returning to public duties later this week with two appearances on Wednesday.

William will undertake an investiture at Windsor Castle on Wednesday morning and also attend the London Air Ambulance annual fundraising gala in central London in the evening. He has been Patron of the London Air Ambulance since 2020, and the cause is close to his heart as he was an air ambulance pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance from 2015 to 2017.

While there is no indication that this means William's full program of events will resume imminently, it suggests that Kate’s care is settled enough for him to feel happy returning to work. The Palace always maintained that William would not undertake official engagements during the two weeks she was in hospital or in the immediate period following her return home to Windsor.

The Princess of Wales was admitted to the London Clinic on January 16 for planned abdominal surgery, with the Palace sharing the news publicly the following day. She was discharged two weeks later and quietly taken home to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor to continue her recovery. In a statement at the time of announcing the surgery, the Palace said that the Princess, “hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible, and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.”

On the same day Kate’s surgery was announced, Buckingham Palace also said that the King would take time out from his duties to receive treatment for a benign enlarged prostate. His procedure, also at the London Clinic, meant that for a brief period three of the four most senior royals were absent from public life. During this time, Queen Camilla carried out public visits almost every day.

Kensington Palace has said that Kate’s return to public duties will depend on medical advice closer to the time, but that it is likely she will not appear publicly until after Easter. They have also said that there will be no overseas travel for the Prince and Princess of Wales for the coming months.
