Preston vs Tottenham LIVE!

Tottenham saw off Preston in the FA Cup fourth round at Deepdale to keep alive their hopes of a first major trophy since 2008. Spurs were up against mid-table Championship opposition away from home under the lights in Lancashire on Saturday night, having squeezed past third-tier Portsmouth in round three courtesy of a stunning goal from Harry Kane.

The England captain was an unused substitute here as he waits for the 267th goal that would see him move clear of Jimmy Greaves as Tottenham’s outright all-time leading scorer, having been battling illness all week since netting the important winner against Fulham in the Premier League on Monday night. New signing Arnaut Danjuma made his debut as a substitute, scoring late on after a terrific double from Heung-min Son.

It was more than enough to book Spurs’ place in round five after a dull first half, with the draw opening up nicely for Antonio Conte’s side. Follow Preston vs Tottenham reaction live below, with expert analysis from Dan Kilpatrick at the ground.

88 mins: A debut goal for Danjuma, who rather scuffs his finish from a low Kulusevski cross into the bottom corner!

What a start to his Spurs career for the Villarreal loanee.

He celebrates passionately in front of the away end. What a night this has turned into for Conte and Tottenham.

19:45 , George Flood

83 mins: Son gets an ovation from the away end as he makes way for Bryan Gil.

Will this be a turning point for the South Korean?

19:41 , George Flood

79 mins: Preston are not lacking heart but this is all over bar the most extraordinary of late comebacks.

Kane isn’t going to be needed tonight, which will be a huge relief to Conte. He will have to wait for the scoring record a bit longer.

Son is going to be withdrawn in a second too, so no hat-trick.

19:37 , George Flood

77 mins: Two more changes from Ryan Lowe as Manchester United loanee Alvaro Fernandez and PNE stalwart Daniel Johnson replace Brady and McCann.

19:36 , George Flood

74 mins: Danjuma is straight into the thick of the action and poses an immediate threat, but he’s frustrated as he doesn’t get the return ball he’s looking for on the edge of the Preston box.

19:32 , George Flood

71 mins: Preston react to that goal by sending on former Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn in place of Ledson.

It’s a triple change from Conte, meanwhile, with a debut for new loan signing Arnaut Danjuma.

He comes on with Oliver Skipp and Emerson Royal. Off go Bentacur, Sessegnon and Doherty.

Dan Kilpatrick at Deepdale

19:30 , George Flood

Another super Son goal will raise hopes that this is a turning point in his season. He failed to kick on after brilliant displays against Leicester and Eintracht Frankfurt in the first half of the campaign, but next up for Spurs are Manchester City, a team he loves to face.

GOAL! Preston 0-2 Tottenham | Heung-min Son 69'

19:28 , George Flood

69 mins: Son at the double!

He takes a touch and turns to bamboozle Storey, then smashing a confident effort in off the fingertips of Woodman.

That should seal Tottenham’s place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Two great goals from Son. His confidence will have been done the world of good.

19:25 , George Flood

The game has opened up since Son’s goal, with Preston committing more players forward in search of an equaliser.

Kane or new signing Danjuma would surely benefit from the extra space.

19:25 , George Flood

65 mins: Spurs are now trying to take the sting out of this Preston fightback and quieten a passionate home crowd.

Perisic’s clever flicked header is pushed over by an uncertain Woodman.

Doherty then can’t reach an overhit cross to the back stick.

25 minutes to go, with Tottenham still holding that narrow advantage.

19:21 , George Flood

62 mins: Preston’s response since going behind has been spirited.

Evans has caused real problems for this Spurs backline at times and he takes on two before being stopped and a first-time pass is then sent into the feet of Whiteman on the edge of the box.

The rumoured Fulham target takes a couple of touches before dragging a bending shot not too far wide of the post.

19:20 , George Flood

60 mins: Some real tempo to this cup tie now as Preston come back forward after a Spurs counter is quickly thwarted.

Cannon goes down theatrically just inside the box under pressure from Tanganga and is booked for a dive.

That looked like the right decision by referee Peter Bankes. The contact he was expecting never came.

19:18 , George Flood

58 mins: So much more zip in Spurs’ passing in this second half.

But Preston are starting to grow their ambition after falling behind, getting a corner off Sessegnon that is hopelessly wasted by Brady.

Watch: Spurs lead through Son stunner

19:17 , George Flood

What an effort from Son...

19:15 , George Flood

54 mins: The game has opened up nicely since that Son screamer, with Spurs brimming with new-found confidence and continuing to move the ball so much quicker in search of a swift second goal that would surely put this game to bed.

Preston try to launch a rare move forward but the danger posed by Cannon is quickly sniffed out.

Dan Kilpatrick at Deepdale

19:13 , George Flood

A glimpse of the Son of old! The South Korean had two sighters in the first half but Preston did not learn their lesson.

Just as against Portsmouth in the last round, Spurs take the lead straight after the restart through a moment of brilliance.

GOAL! Preston 0-1 Tottenham | Heung-min Son 50'

19:09 , George Flood

50 mins: WHAT A STRIKE FROM SON!

He find himself in plenty of space after another nifty Spurs passing move and unleashes an unstoppable curling strike that bends beautifully beyond the despairing dive of Woodman and into the bottom corner.

He’s had a tough season so far, but that was a real moment of quality from the South Korean. Superb.

Preston with a mountain to climb now.

 (Action Images via Reuters)

(Action Images via Reuters)

19:08 , George Flood

48 mins: Spurs are trying to move the ball far more quickly now, but Lenglet fires well over with Sessegnon in acres of space outside.

19:07 , George Flood

47 mins: Kulusevski’s strike inadvertently deflects off Perisic as Spurs look to take the initiative early in this second period.

Evans is desperate for a bit of help at the other end as Preston try to counter.

To say he’s cut an isolated figure so far tonight would be something of an understatement.

19:05 , George Flood

Back underway at Deepdale, with no changes from either side at the break.

Kane and Danjuma still on the Spurs bench.

Let’s hope for a more engrossing second half.

19:00 , George Flood

Just the 72 per cent possession for Spurs in that first half, seven shots but only two on target and half a dozen corners.

No attempts on goal or corners from Preston yet.

18:55 , George Flood

As well as Kane, Spurs need some creativity to break through this stubborn Preston rearguard.

You wonder if a Danjuma or Bryan Gil might be sent on first by Conte, who has cut an unusually subdued figure on the touchline so far tonight.

18:51 , George Flood

Half-time

18:49 , George Flood

Preston 0-0 Tottenham

A classic, it certainly ain’t.

Spurs dominating possession as expected, with chances for Son and Kulusevski.

But Preston have defended doggedly, making a number of key blocks to keep this level.

But no forward threat whatsoever from the hosts.

18:47 , George Flood

45 mins: Just the one minute of added time signalled at the end of this first half.

18:45 , George Flood

43 mins: A crucial challenge inside the box from Liam Lindsay denies Kulusevski after much better and quicker Spurs build-up play with half-time approaching.

That was a superbly-timed block as the Swede went to pull the trigger.

18:43 , George Flood

40 mins: Woodman confidently plucks a cross out of the air and Preston make a very rare foray forward with some snappy passing.

However, they quickly give it away and here come Spurs again.

They work it nicely over to Sessegnon, who takes on an isolated Whiteman but ends up lofting a cross wide of the back post.

So disappointing again from Tottenham.

18:41 , George Flood

38 mins: It’s just not working out for Spurs in the first half despite all their possession, with Bentancur doing all the hard work before accidentally knocking the ball out for a goal kick.

Nothing whatsoever going forward for Preston, but they have stood up to the task very well in defence, keeping their rigid shape and discipline throughout.

How long until we see the likes of Kane and Danjuma if this is still goalless at the interval?

18:38 , George Flood

36 mins: Half a dozen corners now for Spurs as Perisic’s initial delivery is headed behind by Brady.

Now they go short and Kulusevski whistles a decent effort over the crossbar.

18:37 , George Flood

34 mins: This is a real war of attrition at the moment that is desperately short on quality.

Hughes has a little go at Kulusevski and then takes out Doherty, giving Son the chance to swing in a delivery from wide on the right.

But he can’t even clear a one-man wall in Brady. Deary me.

That’s not the first time that’s happened either.

Dan Kilpatrick at Deepdale

18:34 , George Flood

Son looks livelier than in recent weeks, which is good news because Spurs really need someone else to step up in Kane’s absence.

There’s not much spark or quality on show out there and the longer that continues the more Preston will grow in confidence.

 (REUTERS)

(REUTERS)

18:34 , George Flood

31 mins: Sessegnon races clear into the Preston penalty area after a smart round-the-corner pass from Perisic.

But he clearly went too early there and the offside flag is promptly raised.

18:32 , George Flood

29 mins: The error-prone Sanchez is incredibly fortunate to get away with botching a clearance under massive pressure from the chasing Everton loanee Tom Cannon.

He eventually gets it back to Forster, who clears with a big boot.

18:29 , George Flood

27 mins: Preston have success with a high press as Spurs can’t clear their lines and the hosts seize on a deflected clearance.

There are few options available for Ledson, who ends up driving well wide.

18:28 , George Flood

26 mins: A brief break in play again as a few rogue white balloons that have made their way onto the pitch are dealt with by a swift stamp of the studs.

18:27 , George Flood

24 mins: Tottenham continue to see all of the ball but just cannot find a way through Preston’s determined rearguard.

That is until space opens up for Son and he unleashes another well-struck effort from outside the box that is parried behind by Woodman.

Dan Kilpatrick at Deepdale

18:24 , George Flood

Spurs often struggle to break down opponents who stack men behind the ball and this game is no different so far.

Kulusevski, the likeliest Spurs player to make something happen, has been kept quiet on the right.

18:24 , George Flood

21 mins: Momentary panic inside the Spurs box as Preston fashion a half-chance following a free-kick, but Forster isn’t tested.

At the other end, a handball from Son curtails Tottenham’s latest attack as they try to use the ball a lot quicker.

Preston standing resolute in defence just at the moment.

18:21 , George Flood

19 mins: Preston decline to cross when they should after that useful Evans-led break and an eventual ball from Browne on the opposite flank is easily gobbled up by the towering figure of Forster.

The Championship side are going to have to do so much better than that with their fleeting glimpses of possession.

80 per cent of the ball for Tottenham so far. The difference in completed passes is mammoth, as you might expect.

 (Getty Images)

(Getty Images)

18:20 , George Flood

17 mins: Browne concedes another corner, though Son’s disappointing delivery is easily cleared at the front post.

Preston struggle to clear their lines effectively until two bits of cracking centre-forward play on the break from Evans push the hosts well up the pitch.

18:18 , George Flood

15 mins: Spurs continue to monopolise possession and Doherty and Perisic combine to tee up Son, who tries his luck with a bending effort from outside the box.

Woodman has to readjust on the fly to make an awkward save down low.

18:16 , George Flood

13 mins: It’s all a bit scrappy now after that bright start from Spurs.

But they are still completely dominating possession.

However, no final ball at the moment, with Tanganga hopelessly pinging one forward into the grateful arms of Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

18:13 , George Flood

11 mins: A first bout of pressure for Preston now as they force a few throw-ins down the near side.

But Spurs quickly re-assume control.

The hosts need to hold it up much better than this.

18:12 , George Flood

10 mins: Perisic is away down the Spurs left but his cutback can’t reach Son in the middle.

A break in play now as Preston midfielder Ali McCann receives treatment for a bloodied nose.

He will need a change of shirt.

Dan Kilpatrick at Deepdale

18:10 , George Flood

It’s been a lively start from both Spurs and their travelling fans, who are here in strong numbers (around 6,000) and giving a rousing rendition of their most controversial hits, including thoughts on Sol Campbell and Daniel Levy.

18:10 , George Flood

8 mins: This has been a very confident start from Tottenham.

They look intent on finding an early goal here, with Preston penned back in their own half and completely lacking an out ball.

 (REUTERS)

(REUTERS)

18:09 , George Flood

7 mins: Perisic - operating in a surprise centre-forward role early on here - drills a free-kick into the wall.

The rebound falls kindly for Kulusevski, who takes over from Sanchez and sees a shot well blocked behind by Ledson.

18:08 , George Flood

6 mins: A free-kick in a decent position for Spurs after Whiteman goes in late on Tanganga, who certainly felt that one.

He stays down initially but is now back on his feet and ready to continue.

18:07 , George Flood

18:06 , George Flood

3 mins: An early sight of goal for Spurs as the ball is played out to Sessegnon in space, with his lofted cross towards Doherty at the back post headed behind by Republic of Ireland team-mate Robbie Brady.

Preston clear the subsequent corner away from a lurking Son.

18:04 , George Flood

2 mins: Deafening noise inside Deepdale as both sides look to feel their way into this cup contest early doors.

Preston need no second invitation to go long as they look to put the likes of Sanchez and Lenglet under early pressure.

Spurs seeing most of the ball and trying to fashion an early opportunity.

18:03 , George Flood

Tottenham are in their zany blue third kit tonight, with Preston lining up in their traditional white shirts and navy shorts.

KICK-OFF

18:01 , George Flood

Underway at a bouncing Deepdale!

This should be a cracking cup tie under the lights.

Not an easy task for Spurs by any means.

Dan Kilpatrick at Deepdale

18:00 , George Flood

About 23 thousand fans here tonight in total, including just under six thousand Spurs supporters.

Deepdale is bouncing.

17:59 , George Flood

A brilliant atmosphere inside Deepdale as the players emerge from the tunnel.

Davinson Sanchez is the stand-in captain for Spurs and leads them out in the absence of Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane.

Great noise from the Bill Shankly Kop.

17:56 , George Flood

Preston, it should be noted, have been far better away from home this season in the Championship, where they sit 11th and only two points off the play-offs.

They have won only three of 14 home matches so far this term in the league - only rock-bottom Wigan have fared worse in front of their own fans.

However, they are doing well because of their eight wins in 14 away games -tied for the best mark in the league along with Sheffield United and Luton.

Expect Ryan Lowe’s side, who operate with three at the back, to allow Spurs to dominate possession before springing forward dangerously on the counter-attack.

Only leaders Arsenal have a better away record than Tottenham in the Premier League, meanwhile.

Dan Kilpatrick at Deepdale

17:53 , George Flood

You wonder to what extent the strangeness of the calendar has impacted Conte’s selection decisions tonight.

Lloris clearly needs a post-World Cup rest while Kane has played 36 straight matches for club and country already this season, so no surprise he isn’t risked after a cold.

Stellini confirms Richarlison injury setback

17:30 , George Flood

On pre-match press duties again tonight, Antonio Conte’s assistant Cristian Stellini has confirmed that Richarlison misses out on the squad after an injury setback in training.

However, it’s not a big issue and the Brazilian - who was at Meadow Park supporting compatriot Lucas Moura on his return from injury in Under-21 action last night - should return later this week.

“Richarlisonis not available today. It’s not a big problem so we only have to wait some days,” Stellini said.

Evans and Whiteman come in for Preston

17:21 , George Flood

For Preston, it’s two changes from the side that beat Birmingham 2-1 in the Championship last weekend after early goals from Ryan Ledson and captain Alan Browne at St Andrew’s.

The cup-tied Manchester City loanee Liam Delap is replaced in midfield by the fit-again Ben Whiteman, while in attack former Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn makes way for Ched Evans.

Brad Potts is back on the bench after injury, along with Patrick Bauer and young forward Finlay Cross-Adair.

Kane and Danjuma on bench as Spurs change seven

17:12 , George Flood

So that’s seven changes from Antonio Conte to the Tottenham side that started the win over Fulham on Monday night.

The headline news is obviously Harry Kane only being on the bench after that battle with illness, not starting for the first time this season after a run of 29 straight games in the first XI.

He is joined among the substitutes by new signing Arnaut Danjuma, but there is no Richarlison in the squad at all.

Hugo Lloris is also given the night off after a rough spell over recent weeks, with Fraser Forster in goal and backed up by Brandon Austin.

Rodrigo Bentancur, Ivan Perisic, Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski are the only players to retain their starting berths from Craven Cottage.

Japhet Tanganga, Davinson Sanchez, Clement Lenglet, Matt Doherty, Yves Bissouma and Ryan Sessegnon all come in along with Forster.

Tottenham’s last visit to Deepdale...

16:46 , George Flood

Tottenham have won 30 of the previous 68 meetings against Preston, but the two sides have not met in the league since 1961.

All seven meetings since then have been in the cup competitions, with North End only coming out on top with a 2-1 FA Cup win all the way back in 1966.

The only clash between the two sides this century was in September 2009, when Peter Crouch scored a hat-trick to go with goals from Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane to seal a 5-1 romp in the third round of the then Carling Cup for Harry Redknapp’s men.

Chris Brown was on target for a Preston side managed by Alan Irvine.

Spurs no strangers to FA Cup upset

16:38 , George Flood

Tottenham are eight-time winners of the FA Cup, but have not lifted football’s oldest trophy since a 2-1 triumph over Nottingham Forest at the old Wembley back in 1991.

Spurs reached the semi-finals in both 2017 and 2018 but have now been dumped out in the fifth round three years running, including by Middlesbrough at the Riverside last season.

That upset will give Preston plenty of hope of pulling off their own shock this evening.

An overcast and wet day in Lancashire, but that shouldn’t detract from what should be a very lively atmosphere this evening.

Preston - FA Cup winners in both 1889 and 1938 - have not been beyond the fourth round of this competition since 2015, when they were beaten by Manchester United in the last-16.

Danjuma ready for Tottenham debut

16:19 , George Flood

If Kane weren’t ready to start tonight, it could mean Richarlison potentially playing through the middle on his first start since the World Cup break.

Arnaut Danjuma seems most likely to come off the bench for his debut having only joined in midweek, though he’s fit and ready to feature from the off if needed.

“He is available,” Stellini said of the versatile Dutch winger, Spurs’ first January recruit who sensationally snubbed Everton at the 11th hour.

“He is a player we can use in the game. He is a player that can play like a striker or a winger. He has a lot of positions he can cover. So we are happy and we are looking forward to working with him.”

Kane set for reduced role?

16:09 , George Flood

So just how big a role will Kane play in tonight’s proceedings?

The England captain is never one to miss a game unless he absolutely has to, especially with that outright scoring record now tantalisingly close and Championship defenders on tap.

Antonio Conte is not usually fond of resting his talisman and the FA Cup represents Tottenham’s best chance of silverware this term, but they have some other very important games coming up fast including Premier League meetings with Manchester City, West Ham and Chelsea plus their two-legged Champions League last-16 tie against AC Milan.

“We only have one problem with Harry, because he played the last game full of illness and he didn’t train during the week,” said Spurs assistant Cristian Stellini on Friday, sent to face reporters in place of Conte.

“He trained this morning, but he wants to come with us and be available. We know that Harry wants to play every game so we are happy that Harry is available but we have to take care.”

Harry Kane scoring debate

15:57 , George Flood

A debate seems to have been brewing this week about just where Harry Kane stands in relation to the all-time Tottenham scoring mark.

According to official club records, he is level with the late Jimmy Greaves on 266 goals and will become the outright leader with his next strike for Spurs, which could come this evening.

However, others have contended this week that Greaves should actually be credited with 268 goals, having netted twice in the 5-1 1962 FA Charity Shield drubbing of Ipswich at Portman Road.

It seems that Tottenham’s historians are not counting that as a competitive fixture, hence the arguments and confusion.

Standard Sport’s chief football correspondent Dan Kilpatrick has arrived at Deepdale, one of English football’s most famous old traditional grounds adorned by tributes to Preston icon and England legend Sir Tom Finney.

Preston vs Tottenham prediction

15:44 , George Flood

While Tottenham have looked far from convincing at the back in recent weeks, Preston are not exactly prolific when it comes to scoring. Only Huddersfield and Cardiff have netted fewer goals in the Championship this season.

With confidence still fragile, any win will do for Spurs as they look to finally kick their season into gear, and another narrow victory could be on the cards.

Preston team news

Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott is absent for Preston tonight as he cannot play against his parent club.

Tottenham team news

15:39 , George Flood

Harry Kane has made himself available for Tottenham tonight as he seeks the 267th goal of his Spurs career that would see him move past the late, great Jimmy Greaves as the club’s all-time top scorer.

However, it could be that the England captain has a more limited role at Deepdale having played through illness while scoring the winner against Fulham in a Premier League London derby on Monday night.

Kane missed a few days of training in the aftermath of that important victory at Craven Cottage and only returned on Friday, though is desperate to play as ever.

Arnaut Danjuma, meanwhile, is expected to come straight into the squad and play some part on debut after snubbing Everton at the 11th hour to join Spurs on loan from Villarreal in midweek.

Lucas Moura stepped up his return from a tendon injury last night by scoring for Tottenham’s Under-21s in a win over Arsenal, while Bryan Gil is a doubt.
