Tottenham saw off Preston in the FA Cup fourth round at Deepdale to keep alive their hopes of a first major trophy since 2008. Spurs were up against mid-table Championship opposition away from home under the lights in Lancashire on Saturday night, having squeezed past third-tier Portsmouth in round three courtesy of a stunning goal from Harry Kane.
The England captain was an unused substitute here as he waits for the 267th goal that would see him move clear of Jimmy Greaves as Tottenham’s outright all-time leading scorer, having been battling illness all week since netting the important winner against Fulham in the Premier League on Monday night. New signing Arnaut Danjuma made his debut as a substitute, scoring late on after a terrific double from Heung-min Son.

Arnaut Danjuma seems most likely to come off the bench for his debut having only joined in midweek, though he’s fit and ready to feature from the off if needed.
“He is available,” Stellini said of the versatile Dutch winger, Spurs’ first January recruit who sensationally snubbed Everton at the 11th hour.
“He is a player we can use in the game. He is a player that can play like a striker or a winger. He has a lot of positions he can cover. So we are happy and we are looking forward to working with him.”

So just how big a role will Kane play in tonight’s proceedings?
The England captain is never one to miss a game unless he absolutely has to, especially with that outright scoring record now tantalisingly close and Championship defenders on tap.
Antonio Conte is not usually fond of resting his talisman and the FA Cup represents Tottenham’s best chance of silverware this term, but they have some other very important games coming up fast including Premier League meetings with Manchester City, West Ham and Chelsea plus their two-legged Champions League last-16 tie against AC Milan.
“We only have one problem with Harry, because he played the last game full of illness and he didn’t train during the week,” said Spurs assistant Cristian Stellini on Friday, sent to face reporters in place of Conte.
“He trained this morning, but he wants to come with us and be available. We know that Harry wants to play every game so we are happy that Harry is available but we have to take care.”

A debate seems to have been brewing this week about just where Harry Kane stands in relation to the all-time Tottenham scoring mark.
According to official club records, he is level with the late Jimmy Greaves on 266 goals and will become the outright leader with his next strike for Spurs, which could come this evening.
However, others have contended this week that Greaves should actually be credited with 268 goals, having netted twice in the 5-1 1962 FA Charity Shield drubbing of Ipswich at Portman Road.
It seems that Tottenham’s historians are not counting that as a competitive fixture, hence the arguments and confusion.
