Manchester City vs Everton LIVE!

Bernardo Silva scored an early goal but struggling Manchester City could only muster a single point in a 1-1 Premier League draw with Everton to kick off a full slate of Boxing Day games on Thursday.

City's slump has seen them win just once in their last 13 matches across all competitions and they provisionally sit sixth in the table with 28 points, 11 below leaders Liverpool who have two games in hand. Everton are 15th, five points above the drop zone.

Silva scored in the 14th minute when Jeremy Doku played a ball in behind the Toffees' defence and Silva slid in to fire into the far corner from a tight angle. But Iliman Ndiaye drew Everton level in the 36th when he took a touch to settle the ball, then unleashed a shot from the centre of the box to the top right corner.

City fans thought they had victory locked up when Erling Haaland stepped up to the penalty spot in the second half after Seamus Coleman's tackle on Savinho, but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford dived correctly to safe the shot. Haaland headed home the rebound, but it was chalked off for offside.

Full-time!

97min: Honours even, then! Another game without a win for City, another big point for Everton!

Boos from the City fans.

14:24 , Alex Young

96min: Everton had four on two, running over the halfway line... but they were so slow to decide what to do before Harrison’s shot is blocked.

14:22 , Alex Young

94min: Foden into the book, he’s been invisible again today.

14:20 , Alex Young

92min: Oh dear, Rico Lewis! Ball falls to him to hit the target inside the area and it almost finds Row Z.

14:19 , Alex Young

91min: Corner comes in, Everton clear with ease.

14:18

90min: SIX minutes added on as De Bruyne lines up a corner.

85min: Gundogan and Simpson-Pusey are on, replacing Ake and Kovacic.

14:11 , Alex Young

83min: Ortega claims the cross.

14:11 , Alex Young

83min: Oh wow, Mangala’s shot flicks off Akanji’s heels and looks to the world to be spinning into the back of the net... but it’s a corner.

14:10 , Alex Young

82min: Lindstrom on for the goalscorer. Still not much of a reaction from City as we enter the final 10.

14:07 , Alex Young

79min: Haaland is found in the area and opts to head down in Bernard’s direction rather than go with a header on goal... and the pass has a little too much on it.

Should he have gone himself?

14:04 , Alex Young

76min: Concern for Branthwaite after a collision with Haaland. He’s down clutching his knee.

14:03 , Alex Young

75min: De Bruyne is on for Doku. City desperate for a bit of end product (I’m looking at you, Erling and Phil).

13:59 , Alex Young

70min: Broja (remember him?) replaces Calvert-Lewin.

13:55 , Alex Young

67min: Savinho tries to bend one from the angle of the area but it’s not troubling Pickford.

13:52 , Alex Young

63min: City have lost their impetus since the penalty.

13:49 , Alex Young

61min: De Bruyne shown (sort of) warming up on the sidelines.

13:46 , Alex Young

58min: Up the other end, an Everton corner is cut short by a foul on Bernardo.

Which is just about as close as Everton have come this half.

13:43 , Alex Young

55min: Deary me, when it doesn’t go your way then it really doesn’t go your way.

Haaland missing a pen!

PENALTY TO CITY!

13:39 , Alex Young

51min: Savinho wiped out by Mykolenko. Stone wall.

13:38 , Alex Young

50min: Haaland can’t control a Doku cross, but it falls for Savinho to have a shot on goal and then Kovacic’s follow up fizzes wide.

13:37 , Alex Young

49min: Far more urgency from City as Haaland meets a cross at the back post, but neither heads towards goal or towards a team-mate.

13:35 , Alex Young

47min: Early City corner is met by Gvardiol at the near post, but Harrison is there to block near the goal.

Second half!

Players are back out.

13:26 , Alex Young

City were seemingly in complete control and then out of nothing, Everton took the lead.

One mistake in defence from Ake, one chance for Ndiaye, one goal for Everton.

36min: Oh wow, out of nowhere Everton are level!

Ndiaye with a rocket after Ake makes a mess of a clearance.

13:06 , Alex Young

33min: Oh, Bernardo! Foden slips in his team-mate into the area, who goes with the outside of his boot and bends it the wrong way round the post.

13:01 , Alex Young

29min: Savinho runs at the Everton defence, cuts inside but sends a shot wildly wide.

Not a huge amount of clear-cut chances.

12:59 , Alex Young

26min: A poor touch from Haaland lets him down.

It’s three games without a goal for The Robot, which is basically an eternity.

12:54 , Alex Young

23min: Foden finds Ake to head over.

12:54 , Alex Young

22min: Haaland wins a corner after rounding Pickford but running it too wide.

12:53 , Alex Young

12:49 , Alex Young

16min: What do Everton have now? They’ve offered little so far.

GOAL!

12:46 , Alex Young

14min: It’s been coming!

Bernardo slipped through into the area and pokes a finish past Pickford off Branthwaite.

12:42 , Alex Young

10min: Bar Gvardiol’s header, it’s been a fairly tepid start to proceedings.

12:39 , Alex Young

7min: Guardiola cutting a twitchy figure on the touchline. He should be fairly happy with what he has seen so far.

12:34 , Alex Young

2min: City seeing plenty of the ball early doors.

1min: After a touching ‘In Memorium’ applause, we are up and running!

12:25 , Alex Young

Teams are out!

12:22 , Alex Young

Foden is back in the starting lineup and scored his first goal of the season last time out.

With De Bruyne on the bench, it will be down to him to make something happen behind Haaland.

A little over 20 minutes until kick-off. City could really do with a nice gift from Everton today, but form dictates otherwise.

More from Pep

11:59 , Alex Young

"We need to win games so that we can come back into the rhythm. We need to think about the next one. We cannot think further ahead and we are going to try.

"I like to be here. I love the club, the hierarchy, the people, the life in Manchester and many other things. Now more than ever. We have a lot of problems but let's turn it around. That's the target.

"[Everton] have held prolific teams like Arsenal and Chelsea. So they are really good. We need to try to add speed and quality up front and hopefully we will be good today."

Pep Guardola to Amazon Prime

11:47 , Alex Young

“We have to, if we can, add [players in January], definitely. Yeah.

“We struggle especially in the back, in the middle. I don't know if it's going to happen because in the transfer window in then winter is not easy.

“But everybody's aware [we have to sign players]. I think even the players asked ‘are we going to add some players, please?’.”

11:32 , Alex Young

It's no wonder City are struggling.

They have EIGHT players out today, with De Bruyne on a bench with includes youngsters and two goalkeepers.

For Everton, captain Seamus Coleman, 36, makes his first start of the season.

Team news in imminent

11:10 , Alex Young

Boxing Day line-ups coming in five minutes.

A changing of the tide?

11:03

Man City have not lost to Everton, in any competition, since 2017. That’s a record going back 15 games, in which they won 10 of the last 11.

It’s been near-domination for City, then. But, with Everton having just taken points off Arsenal and Chelsea - who are in the title race - then who knows what will happen today.

Guardiola defends goal-shy Haaland

10:55 , Alex Young

"It's about us, it's not just about one player.

"So when in the past we scored goals and Erling was so prolific in helping us, it's because of the team. And when you have problems at the back, in the middle, it's for everyone.

"If it was just one player, the reason why, it would be easy. It's not about that. Erling is so important for us, will be so important for us, has been, and we try to do the things better, to use him better."

Dyche not taking anything for granted

10:47 , Alex Young

Everton manager Sean Dyche is wary of under-estimating a woefully out-of-form Manchester City.

"They've enjoyed so much success under Pep over the years that everybody seems to be under this impression that it's when, not if, it turns back," he said.

"I don't know all of Pep's history, but I think it's unlikely he's had too many spells like this.

"It's not like you go there and think, 'We're going to win just because'. We've got to go and deliver a performance. We've got to play hard, we've got to play strong.

"They haven't all become terrible players overnight. He certainly is not a terrible manager.

"We've got to have all the tactical discipline we've been showing and forge as many chances as we can to win it."

Xmas duty for City

10:40 , Alex Young

Pep Guardiola has opened up on a Manchester City tradition that has been broken this year amid the club’s poor run of form.

Following defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend, City have won just once in their last 12 games across all competitions and have slipped to seventh in the Premier League.

So, Guardiola has called on his players to give it their all over the festive period in an attempt to turn around their dire form, which means training on Christmas Day.

Ultimately this is with the Boxing Day clash at home to Everton in mind. Though it’s not something that City players have become accustomed to in recent seasons.

"We've been fortunate in the past couple of seasons that we haven't had to train on Christmas Day,” the City captain said when speaking on his ‘You'll Never Beat Kyle Walker’ podcast. “We are doing this season because we've got Everton at 12.30 on Boxing Day.

“But the last couple of seasons we've had Christmas Day off, which has been very nice..."

Guardiola elaborated: “We train [on Christmas Eve] and we train tomorrow night, and then we stay here and then play on Boxing Day.

“Tonight and tomorrow, they will be with their families. Tomorrow night they will be here. Hopefully they want to be here - it is our job.”

Man City vs Everton prediction

10:33 , Alex Young

Every week you expect Man City to get better and every week they simply do not. It’s now one win in eight for the champions after their 2-1 loss at Aston Villa.

Next up they face a Toffees team who have just taken points off both Arsenal and Chelsea and Sean Dyche will be licking his lips at the prospect of extending Pep Guardiola’s miserable run, but history is against Everton.

City have dropped just two points out of a possible 42 against Everton, in a commanding run dating back to 2018. Never been as good a time as now to beat City, but it’s still a tall order, especially a home.

Man City to win, 2-1.

Everton team news

Everton full-back Ashley Young is suspended so captain Seamus Coleman is set for his first start since August after injury.

Winger Dwight McNeil (knee) is unlikely to be fit in time.

Man City team news

10:12 , Alex Young

Pep Guardiola is today sweating over his defence.

Ruben Dias is injured and John Stones, who has only just returned to action after missing six games, is a major doubt after being replaced at half-time in the loss against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Nathan Ake, who was only fit enough for the bench against Villa, could partner Manuel Akanji at the heart of City’s defence, though the Dutchman may not be risked given his injury record this season.

Therefore, Josko Gvardiol may operate as a centre-back once again with Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis as the full-backs.

Stefan Ortega is likely to continue in between the sticks as Ederson is also a doubt after missing the trip to Villa Park. Oscar Bobb and Rodri are definitely out as they are long-term injury casualties.

Kevin De Bruyne could return in midfield after being completely rested against Aston Villa and he could replace Ilkay Gundogan with Mateo Kovacic and Phil Foden - fresh off scoring his first Premier League goal of the season - retaining their places.

Guardiola has said the responsibility is on his side to use Erling Haaland better, so he may look to freshen up his attack in an attempt to provide the Norwegian with better service.

Jeremy Doku and Savinho were both second half substitutes last time out, but may be upgraded to starters in support of City’s No.9 who has scored just one Premier League goal in his last six appearances.
