FACING SID AND ERIK

Who knows how much Sid ‘The Kid’ Crosby has left in the tank.

He’s 37 years old.

But the Pittsburgh Penguins star centre seems to have plenty of tread left on the tires.

After putting up 94 points (42 goals and 52 assists) a season ago, Sid has 30 points (eight goals and 22 assists) for a Penguins team, which, like Ottawa, is dog-paddling to stay above water.

Crosby will play in the 4 Nations Face-Off, where he’ll be the oldest player in the tournament, one year older than Canadian teammate Brad Marchand. There’s also a good chance Crosby will be named Canada’s captain for the event, which is in February.

It’s also a chance to see Erik Karlsson, the not-so-long-ago electric defenceman who was with the Senators from 2009-18. It was just two seasons ago Karlsson put up 101 points playing for the San Jose Sharks. So far this season, he has 19 points (two goals and 17 assists).

ROAD TO RECOVERY

After facing the Penguins, the Senators hit the road. They’ll be away for nearly a month, a stretch of nine games winding well into the new year, before returning home for a Jan. 9 game vs. the Buffalo Sabres.

The trip starts Tuesday in Seattle.

It was about this time a year ago where the Senators collapsed on the road, with head coach DJ Smith getting fired 26 games into the season after the team had lost its fourth straight game.

DID YOU KNOW?

Tim Stutzle assisted on Drake Batherson’s 100th career goal Wednesday. Batherson also assisted on Stutzle’s 100th career goal (Nov. 23 against Vancouver).

TAKE A TOY

If you’re going to the game, take along a new, unwrapped toy and donate it to Toy Mountain. It’ll make you feel really good about being part of a terrific initiative. Toy Mountain and the Salvation Army provide toys to more than 25,000 children each Christmas.
