Former President Donald Trump may have scored a Greg Gutfeld booking, but Vice President Kamala Harris secured an Oprah Winfrey sit-down. The Democratic candidate for president appeared alongside the TV icon as part of a Unite for America rally in Michigan that streamed live on Thursday.

Some of Winfrey’s famous friends were part of the event as well, including Chris Rock, Jennifer Lopez and Meryl Streep. But the main focus was on ordinary voters, some of whom had the chance to ask Harris their questions directly.

But before turning it over to the audience in the room and virtually, Winfrey had her own questions for the candidate, starting how she stepped into the election cycle with such confidence after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race.

“I felt a sense of responsibility,” Harris replied. “And with that comes a sense of purpose.”

Later on in the event, Winfrey also remarked upon her surprise at learning that Harris is a gun owner. “If somebody breaks in my house, they’re getting shot,” the vice president joked before immediately walking the comment back. “I probably should not have said that, but my staff will deal with that later.”

Meanwhile, audience members inquired about her plans to address issues ranging from school shootings to abortion. One of the first questions from the crowd included a question about immigration and the Southern border—a closely-scrutinized part of her vice presidential portfolio.

“This is not a theoretical issue for me,” Harris responded, noting her history as a senator from a border state. “This is something I’ve actually worked on.”

The Unite for America rally represents Harris’ longest on-camera interview since her Sept. 10 ABC News debate with Trump, which was watched by over 67 million viewers. She gave her first post-debate interview to Philadelphia’s ABC affiliate and also spoke with the National Association of Black Journalists.

So far, her only conversation with a major news outlet remains her Aug. 29 appearance on CNN alongside running mate Tim Walz. That interview brought in 6.3 million viewers. To date, over 1.5 million viewers have streamed the Unite for America event on YouTube.
