Milan vs Inter

Internazionale claimed their 20th Scudetto in the sweetest fashion possible as they beat rivals AC Milan 2-1 to secure the 2023/24 Serie A title.

Simone Inzaghi’s side carried a 14-point lead into Monday’s Derby della Madonnina at San Siro. The title was a formality, but Milan needed at least draw to avoid the ignominy of handing their sworn enemies glory on the night.

Rossoneri boss Stefano Pioli shuffled his pack after the dispiriting UEFA Europa League exit at the hands of Roma, dropping Olivier Giroud and handing Rafael Leao a roving central attacking role.

Despite a “home fixture” for Milan at the stadium they share with Inter, the squad got off to a lackadaisical start. Inzaghi’s well-grooved, champion side pulled their foes around the field. Milan then picked the worst possible moment to stand still when veteran centre-back Francesco Acerbi was left unmarked to head home after Benjamin Pavard flicked on Federico Dimarco’s corner.

Livewire wingback Dimarco was to the fore as Inter cut through Milan and top-scorer Lautaro Martinez botched a close-range opportunity. Marcus Thuram then steered a side-footed effort narrowly wide after lovely work form the typically sublime Nicolo Barella.

Thuram was Inter’s standout attacker and he produced the moment that sealed the title four minutes after halftime. The France forward chased Pavard’s raking ball into the left channel, beat Fikayo Tomori with some deft footwork and clipped a shot past Mike Maignan at the near post.

Inter threatened to pile on further misery but a flurry of substitutions robbed them of their rhythm and Tomori’s close-range header set up a grandstand finale where tensions boiled over. It finished 10 vs. 9 as Inter substitute Denzel Dumfries and Milan defenders Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria each all saw red for their part in a couple of fracas.

The most significant statistic and one that will be crowed about long into a damp Milanese night is Inter’s 20 titles to Milan’s 19.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a team with nine men have their goalie up for a corner. A real collector's item. The more significant collector's item is a title win at the direct expense of your most bitter rivals. Inter got over the line after a late scare, having dominated for the most part. A hail of boos from the largely pro-Milan crowd but the Nerazzurri lap that up. The party is just getting started. Thanks for being with us. Arrivederci!

90th minute+7: Maignan is up for another corner. Oh, and they're fighting again! Calabria is throwing hands and gets set off! He cracked Frattesi in the face then had a go at Martinez on his way off for good measure.

90th minute+5: Leao on his bike. Wins the corner. Maignan is up. Inter break away and Martinez wins the free-kick. That should do it.

90th minute+3: It's all kicked off. Dumfries gets a rise out of Hernandez. A huge scramble of players follow up. A ruck and a maul and Dumfries and Hernandez are both sent off.

90th minute+2: Tomori now booked for pulling back Martinez. Maybe Inter won't simply boot the ball back to Milan this time. Their players are gathered on the touchline, ready to celebrate.

90th minute+1: Leao charges into the Inter box. Pavard makes a brilliant tackle and wins a goal kick into the bargain.

90th minute: Gabbia mashes Martinez into the turf. Inter free-kick on the left. Errrrr... okay. Asllani passes up a chance to keep the ball and go to the corner in favour of having a really quite terrible shot.

88th minute: De Vrij is coming on for Bastoni to shore up the Inter defence. Inzaghi has just got himself booked for timewasting with the ball on the sidelines. They won't mind if they get there, but this is not the romp over the line Inter looked like enjoying half an hour or so ago.

86th minute: You wonder if Inzaghi might have over-played his hand by taking so many of his best players off. The back-ups are going to have to get them over the line here.

83rd minute: Are Milan going to pull this out of the fire. Bastoni and Sommer get themselves in a tangle dealing with a cross from the right. Pavard clatters the ball out of his own goalmouth. Anywhere will do!

80th minuteGOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!! Fikayo Tomori!!!

Now then! Chukuweze curls a lovely ball in from the right, Leao nods across goal and Gabbia should score. Sommer saves at point-blank range but a stooping Tomori is there to finish on the rebound.

74th minute: Nice combination play between Hernandez and Leao, who is clearly so much more comfortable out on the left. The move ends with Calabria crashing a volley over.

72nd minute: Pavard gets up to head over from a setpiece. Inzaghi is preparing some changes of his own.

68th minute: Bennacer and Chukwueze are on for Adli and Loftus-Cheek.

64th minute: That looked like a fairly obvious foul by Loftus-Cheek on Mkhitaryan. In the referee's defence, the Inter fans recently let off a load of smoke bombs so maybe he couldn't see.

63rd minute: Hernandez tries to get something going for Milan but his advances are met by a pair of thundering challenges from his compatriot Pavard and Calhanoglu.

58th minute: It's like the flying arrows out there for the Milan defence. Inter players darting everywhere and no one knowing quite who to pick up. Calhanoglu hits a rasping shot from 30 yards that Maignan does well to tip over. Then the flag goes up for an offside earlier in the move. No idea, I'm afraid.

52nd minute: It's now or never for Milan and on comes Giroud for Reijnders.

49th minuteGOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!! Marcus Thuram!!!

That's a beauty and certainly feels like the goal that wraps up the title. Thuram chases the ball into the left channel, turns deftly past Tomori and clips his shot beyond Maingan at the near post. Milan's defending was too passive there and they were emphatically punished.

— CBS Sports Golazo ⚽️ (@CBSSportsGolazo) April 22, 2024 Kickoff: 2nd Half

We're back underway. Not changes from either side. Expect Inzaghi to freshen up his wingback with about an hour played. When will Pioli turn to Olivier Giroud?

Halftime

A few hints just then that Milan were belatedly warming to their task but Inter have largely shown why the yawning 14-point gap exists. When they click, Inzaghi's men are a class apart. Acerbi's header is the difference right now but Martinez and Thuram could have added further pain. Regardless, Inter are 45 minutes away from their 20th Scudetto.

45th minute+1: End-to-end stuff again. So much room again. Dimarco is chopped down and wants a foul. The referee says "play on" and Milan charge up the other end, where a last-ditch challenge denies Leao.

39th minute: Chances at both ends as Sommer gets down to make a sharp stop from a Calabria shot at his near post and Inter break. Thuram chewing up the ground and Dimarco thunders goalwards. Maingan beats it away.

38th minute: The free-kick is laid off but by the time Dimarco gets his shot off the Milan wall has broken and closed it down. Oh and Thuram almost doubles the lead. Barella pops up in the left channel this time and picks out Thuram, who opens his body and sidefoots just past the far post. Inter could be out of sight already.

37th minute: The Barella-Hernandez duel continues to be an unedifying spectacle. The Inter playmaker is looking to cause problems on the edge of the box and the France full-back scythes into him. That's another booking.

32nd minute: Martinez the second Inter player into the book as he clumsily catches Tomori in the head with his boot. No malice but it's careless, dangerous play.

29th minute: Just a scandalous amount of room for Inter to operate through midfield. Mkhitaryan has the run of San Siro this time. Darmian's low cross is blocked and Milan can break. Musah thrusting through the gears, finds Leao and forces Sommer into a save to his right. Reckon he'll be slightly disappointed with that finish.

25th minute: Dear, oh dear it should be 2-0! Milan cough up possession and Dimarco drives through midfield. The wingback exchanges passes with Thuram and fires low across the face of goal. Martinez is there for the finishing touch but can't get his feet right and the ball balloons out for a goalkick.

22nd minute: Dimarco booms in another set-piece and forced Maingan to pat it down under his crossbar. Barella then flies into a tackle on Hernandez. A little retribution for earlier but it's crude and earns a booking.

18th minuteGOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!! Francesco Acerbi!!!

The veteran centre-back moves Inter closer to the title but what on earth are Milan doing? Well, the answer is nothing as they play statues from a left-wing corner, leaving Acerbi unmarked to gleefully head home.

12th minute: Musah has a first look at Dimarco and scoots around the Inter wingback. That's nice work, better than the cross that he batters out for a throw.

8th minute: Hernandez is a touch late with a meaty tackle on Barella and players from both teams pile into some pushing and shoving. Spicy!

7th minute: First half-chance for Martinez as Darmian knocks a ball from the left back across goal. The Argentina striker can't get hold of his shot on the turn and slices way over.

6th minute: It's been a very cautious start from both teams, nothing of note in terms of goalmouth activist from either team - perhaps understandably in light of the high stakes.

Kickoff: 1st half

Rafael Leao gets us underway, which pretty much confirms he will line up as Milan's centre-forward.

5 mins before kickoff: Here come the players into one of European football's grandest cathedrals. The atmosphere is ear-shredding.

20 mins before kickoff: AC Milan's two USMNT stars could be the beneficiaries of Pioli's decision to shuffle his pack after the Europa League disappointment. Rafael Leao looks set to start at centre-forward after Olivier Giroud was dropped, meaning a start for Christian Pulisic on the left flank. As a knock-on from that is Yunus Musah being pushed forward from midfield to an attacking role on the right wing. If Milan are to avert humiliation against their rivals, Pulisic and Musah will have to be on point.

55 mins before kickoff: And here's the Milan team. It's their "home" game tonight at the ground both teams share. We might be a month form the end of the season, but that thing they do with the Ms still makes my eyes hurt.

— Inter (@Inter_en) April 22, 2024

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: So you can win titles and beat your rivals and that's all great. But the chance to beat your rivals and win the title... The lack of examples of this sort of thing happening shows how rare it is. In the 2017/18 Premier League season, Manchester City won the title with a record 100-point haul. Sounds perfect, right? Well, Pep Guardiola's team could have confirmed their status as champions a week earlier than they did when they faced Manchester United. They led 2-0 at halftime but lost 3-2 to a Paul Pogba-inspired United. That's the sort of face-saving that would suit Milan down to the ground tonight.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: Inter are going to win the Scudetto. It will be the 20th in their storied history and make the Nerazzurri the second team after Juventus to earn two stars on their home jersey. But there's winning the title and there's winning the title by beating your rivals. You need plenty to align for an opportunity like this to come around. It's basically a once-in-a-lifetime thing. To recap, Inter are 14 points clear with six games (18 points) left on the table. If they beat Milan, they will lead their city rivals by 17 points with 15 to play for and it will be party time.

2 hours before kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of the Derby della Madonnina, where Inter will seek to secure the Serie A title at the expense of their rivals Milan.
