November? I Don't Know Her: Mariah Carey Fast Forwards to Christmas
It’s time to put those skeletons back in their closets, because Mariah Carey has declared that the countdown to Christmas has begun.
You may be familiar with the Gregorian calendar, the Julian calendar, and even the French Republican Calendar (which is a fun one, honestly), but it’s time to bone up on MST: That’s Mariah Standard Time, baby, and it asserts that as of now, it’s the holiday season, and that all she wants for Christmas is you.
Carey posted a video to her Instagram featuring costumed assistants watching a countdown clock tick over from October 31 to November 1, then using blowdryers to free her from a block of ice. Well, technically, the pumpkin-headed personnel and their blowdryers did some of the work, while it appears to be Carey’s high-note belt of “it’s time!” that shattered the ice. Let’s just say her helpers loosened the lid a bit. (And it's a step up from last year's holiday opener, when Carey sat atop a rather haunting faux reindeer.)
Dressed in a Mrs. Claus-inspired onesie, Carey bursts forth from her ice prison to dance in the sudden snowfall with several delighted children and pals. The soundtrack? Well, of course it’s Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Duh. She blows kisses and makes excited faces while trilling “wheeeee!” operatically over her own music. It is, as the kids would say, really something.
The video concludes with a red-scripted message declaring, “It’s time!” It might be ominous, if Carey’s voice hadn’t become synonymous with the wintry holiday season over the last several years.
In a final touch, really putting a bow on it, Carey hashtagged the post not with “Christmas” or “holiday” or anything of the like. No, the queen has spoken, and it is “#MariahSZN.” All hail.
