Mariah Carey Says Mom and Sister Died Over the Weekend
Mariah Carey says her mom, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, died over the weekend on the same day.
In a statement to TODAY.com, the singer said that while she lost her mom over the weekend, her sister passed “in a tragic turn of events.” Carey added that her "heart is broken."
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” Carey said in the statement. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
No additional details regarding Patricia and Alison Carey's deaths have been released.
Who was Mariah Carey's mom?Carey rarely shares insight into her relationships to her mom and sister publicly, though the singer did post an old photo with her mom for a birthday post on Instagram in February 2019.
"Happy birthday to a true diva- my mom, Patricia Carey!" she captioned the post, adding three red heart emoji.
In her 2020 memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey," the singer wrote that her mother was a Juilliard-trained musician who made a living as a voice and music coach.
"Music was something we genuinely connected on, and without pushing or becoming one of those overbearing stage mothers or 'momagers,' she instilled in me the power of believing in myself," she wrote in her book. "Whenever I mused about what I’d do 'if I make it,' she would cut me short and say, 'Don’t say "if I make it," say "when I make it." Believe you can do it, and you will do it.'"
In her memoir, Mariah Carey also revealed that she'd had a contentious relationship with her two older siblings, Alison and brother Morgan.
She recounted witnessing violent fights between her brother and their parents and a time her sister allegedly drugged her. Her sister denied the allegations in the book and filed a defamation suit over Carey’s allegations. Her brother also filed a defamation lawsuit.
It is unclear what became of Alison Carey's lawsuit. New York Supreme Court records show that the defamation suit filed by Morgan Carey remains active in the court.
Who was Mariah Carey's dad, Alfred Roy Carey?Carey has previously posted about her father, Alfred Roy Carey's death. He died from cancer in 2002 at the age of 72, People previously reported.
For Father’s Day in 2023, Carey shared an old photo on Instagram of her dad in what appeared to be a uniform and wrote, “Remembering my Father, the late Alfred Roy Carey ‘Shining like a sunflower up in the sky.’”
In her 2020 memoir, she wrote that when her parents separated, she was 3 years old. Her parents divorced in 1972, she said, and she was largely cut off from her father's side of the family.
She also revealed that growing up mixed race — her mother was white and her father was Black — had been tough for her and her siblings. Mariah Carey added that her siblings felt like she was white-passing, which contributed to the difficult interpersonal relationships in their family.
In October 2022, Carey shared a photo of herself on social media sitting inside a red convertible car in honor of her dad's birthday.
"Happy Birthday to you my Father Alfred Roy Carey..The car you never got to finish is lovingly restored, complete with your spirit and my children.. Sorry I never told you, all I wanted to say," she captioned the post with the sunflower, open hands and red heart emoji.
