Directed by Greta Gerwig, the blockbuster based on the Mattel icon smashed box office records and became the biggest movie of the year, so the film was hotly tipped to sweep this year's Oscar nominations.

The film received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor and Actress nominations for Ryan Gosling (Ken) and America Ferrera (Gloria).

But notable omissions for the film included no nods for Gerwig or Robbie, who starred as the film's titular lead.

Despite major backlash against the awards, Robbie has maintained "there's no way to feel sad when you know you're this blessed" for her part in the production.

However, the Harley Quinn actor added that she believes Gerwig should have been nominated for the Best Director category, which included nods for Oppenheimer's Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorcese for Killers of the Flower Moon, and Anatomy of a Fall's Justine Triet.

"Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director," Robbie continued, during a SAG-AFTRA panel discussion. "What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it's been an incredible year for all the films.

"We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact, and it's already done that and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. That is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this."

Gosling also spoke out in support of Gerwig and Robbie following the nomination announcement, saying: "There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius."
