Ruud van Nistelrooy: Why I still think I can manage Manchester United

Ruud van Nistelrooy has underlined his desire to remain at Manchester United and has not given up hope of being the manager at Old Trafford one day.

Van Nistelrooy has steadied the ship as interim boss since Erik ten Hag was sacked last Monday. Sunday's Premier League match against Leicester City will be his fourth and last at the helm before officially handing over to incoming Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim on Monday, November 11.

A hero of the Stretford End in his playing days, Van Nistelrooy was added to Ten Hag's backroom staff during the summer, which arguably makes his immediate future precarious as Amorim prepares to arrive with his own coaching team.

Nevertheless, the 48-year-old told a press conference that he is not ready for his United chapter to close.

"Of course," Van Nistelrooy replied when asked whether he would like to return to the top job in a permanent capacity.

For the time being, he is keen to underline his availability to Amorim.

“I thought this through well when I made the decision to come to Manchester United as an assistant manager or assistant coach," he said.

"I thought that through and I knew that coming to Manchester United was for me a special occasion where I felt I wanted to be part of this journey with the club in an assistant role.

"I had clear ambitions to manage, I made the decision to sign a two-year deal as an assistant and I’m still in that frame of mind to be fair, to stay in that capacity.”

Leicester will serve as the bookends for Van Nistelrooy's brief stint.

United hammered the Foxes 5-2 in the Carabao Cup before playing out a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League last weekend and beating PAOK 2-0 in the Europa League last night thanks to an Amad Diallo brace.
