United women's Liverpool friendly cancelled

Manchester United Women’s pre-season friendly against Liverpool has been cancelled.

Marc Skinner's side were due to take on our Merseyside rivals on Sunday (25 August) at Carrington, but the match will now not take place.

The cancellation is due to the limited availability of the Liverpool squad, with some of their players sustaining injuries in summer international matches.

“I’d like to thank the staff and players at Manchester United for their understanding and, of course, apologise to them for the disruption,” said Liverpool boss Matt Beard.

“Unfortunately, over the last few weeks, we’ve picked up a number of injuries to players who were involved in the international window during the close season.

“This has limited the avaiilability of the squad, so it’s best that we take this opportunity to have a bit of a reset.”

The game was due to take place behind closed doors, which will also be the case for United Women’s remaining three pre-season fixtures.

Skinner’s team began the pre-season campaign 10 days ago with a friendly against FA Women’s Championship side Durham, and will return to action next weekend, when hosting fellow second-tier side Newcastle United.

Later in September, we will also welcome WSL side Leicester City to Carrington and face Tottenham Hotspur at a neutral venue – as well as closing out our preparations with a training camp in Spain.

UNITED WOMEN AT OLD TRAFFORD

Our season opener is at Old Trafford on Saturday 21 September (kick-off: 12:00 BST). Skinner’s team will welcome West Ham United to the Theatre of Dreams, hoping to make a positive start to the new WSL campaign.
