Lindsay Lohan has said a sequel for the film Freaky Friday is "in the process", adding that she is "excited" to work with Jamie Lee Curtis again.

The 2003 film, a favourite among millennials, starred both actors as a mother and daughter who switch bodies.

"I think we're going to have a lot of fun with this," she told US magazine People about the sequel.

"I'm just excited to work with Jamie again and see how much further we can take it."

Lohan, 37, said she and Oscar winner Curtis, 65, talk "almost every other day".

However, she did not reveal when filming would start or whether the script has been completed.

"I won't say that yet," Lohan told SiriusXM radio. "I don't want to say too much." She added: "We're both excited. I'm going to speak for Jamie."

In Freaky Friday, the mother and daughter duo eat a magical Chinese fortune cookie, which results in them switching bodies.

Curtis and Lohan, who played Tess and Anna Coleman respectively, are expected to return to their roles after more than 20 years.

The film also starred late Sex and the City actor Willie Garson and NCIS's Mark Harmon.

The movie was based on the 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers of the same name, and was the third screen adaptation of the same story.

Lohan, who also acted in The Parent Trap, is due to star in the forthcoming Netflix rom-com Irish Wish.

Curtis, best known for her performances in horror genres, won an Oscar last year for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
