Inspired by a phrase from the 1950s used to describe the glow of new love, Taylor Swift’s “Lavender Haze”—the latest single from her 10th studio album, Midnights—finds the singer lamenting love in the time of TikTok. The song’s video, written and directed by Swift, was released today at—when else?—midnight.

In the clip, Swift is lying awake beside her lover, played by trans model Laith Ashley, when a thick purple fog billows out from beneath the bed. A series of trippy set pieces, including one in which Swift crawls through a field of lavender sprung up from her living room carpeting, complement the track’s psychedelic flourishes. The scenes are interspersed with glamour shots of the singer floating in a lavender pool of water.
