Lakers athletes hit the ice, court and field this weekend

The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team picked up a 2-0 shutout win over the Windsor Lancers on the road. Maggie McKee and Abby Lunney scored for the Lakers, while Chantelle Sandquist made 17 saves in the victory, recording her second shutout of the season. The Lakers will wrap up their weekend with a game against the Western Mustangs Saturday night in London.

Men’s Hockey

Looking to bounce back from a tough weekend in St. Catharines against the Brock Badgers, the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team was back on home ice Friday night.

The Lakers hosted the Western Mustangs, in search of their first win on home ice this year.

Despite a strong showing, the Lakers fell short, losing 5-3 to Western Friday at Memorial Gardens.

In the first, the lone goal came from Lakers captain, Devyn Mayea, who buried his first of the season to put Nipissing up 1-0 after 20 minutes.

The teams combined for four goals in the second period, as Western grabbed a 2-1 lead, scoring both goals in the first minute of the period.

Nipissing replied quickly, tying things up exactly three minutes into the period.

Charles Farmer scored his third goal of the season to make it 2-2.

Charlie Johnson continued her strong start to the season, putting home his fifth of the year giving the Lakers a 3-2 after 40 minutes.

Johnson and Tyson Tomasini assisted on Mayea’s goal, while Farmer and Harrison Caines had helpers on Johnson’s go-ahead goal.

Under five minutes into the third, the Mustangs tied things up at three, setting up a thrilling finish.

With five minutes to go, the Mustangs struck twice in 19 seconds to go ahead 5-3 with time winding down in the game.

Those two goals were the difference, as the Mustangs escaped with the win.

Zach Roy was between the pipes for the Lakers, finishing with 35 saves, while Nipissing had 24 shots of their own.

Nipissing faces Western once again Saturday to close out their weekend.

Game time is set for 7pm at Memorial Gardens.

Women’s Basketball

The Nipissing Lakers women’s basketball team finally got their chance to show what a solid pre-season did for the program, as they began the 2024-24 OUA season Friday night.

The Lakers welcomed the TMU Bold to the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre in the first of two home games this weekend.

The Bold used some hot shooting and strong rebounding to down the Lakers 86-53.

In the opening quarter, Nipissing started strong, grabbing an early lead, but TMU stormed back and caught fire late in the quarter.

They ended up leading 24-12 after 10 minutes of play.

In the second, the Lakers pulled closer thanks to stronger player at both ends of the court, but again the Bold finished strong and finished the half up 45-29.

In the third, trailing by 16, the Lakers were unable to close the gap as the Bold took control of the game in the third, outscoring Nipissing 26-11 to go up 71-40 after 30 minutes of play.

Looking to chip away and finish strong, the Lakers were a step behind as they found themselves down 82-44 with about five minutes remaining in the game.

The teams traded a few baskets down the stretch, but TMU picked up the 86-53 win.

Megan McCarter led the Lakers with 22 points and Taryn Gauthier had eight in the game.

Nipissing hosts the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday night to close out the weekend.

Tip-off is set for 6pm at the RJS Athletic Centre.

Men’s Basketball

Looking to start the season off strong, the Nipissing Lakers men’s basketball team had two tough tests to begin the year.

The Lakers hosted the TMU Bold Friday night in their home opener, as they start the campaign with a pair of home games.

An impressive effort and strong game for three quarters saw the Lakers hang in there, but a late push by the Bold gave them the edge, defeating Nipissing 80-63.

Nipissing got off to a strong start, leading 13-11 in the later stages of the quarter, but a string finish by the Bold saw the Lakers trailing 19-18 after 10 minutes.

Ahead of the halftime break, the Bold extended their lead by outscoring the Lakers 28-18 in the second as they take a 47-36 into the intermission.

In the third, the Lakers fought back and closed the gap, edging the Bold 19-15 in the quarter and pulling within seven, down 62-55.

The Bold began to pull away in the fourth, however, building up an 18-point lead late in the quarter and holding off a Lakers push as time ticked down.

The Bold’s takeover late propelled them to the 17-point victory, 80-63.

Darnaz Mabanza led the Lakers with 23 points, while Alvin Icyogere added 14 in the contest.

Nipissing faces the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday night to close out the weekend.

Tip-off is set for 8pm at the RJS Athletic Centre.

Lacrosse

The Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team fell 13-6 on the road tonight in their CUFLA Playoff game, eliminating them from the playoffs and falling short of the Baggataway Cup. Carter Tait and Zach Tarr each had two goals to lead the offence Friday night.

Women’s Volleyball

The Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (16-25, 18-25, 23-25) decision tonight in Kingston against the Queen’s Gaels. Paige Owen led the Lakers with seven kills and eight points, Anna Marie Horvat added five kills and Oceane Raymond-Leduc had four in the match. The two teams will hit the court Saturday afternoon to wrap up the first weekend of OUA action.

Men’s Volleyball

The Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team dropped their opener, 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 22-25, 17-25), to the Queen’s Gaels Friday night on the road. Taydon Shantz led the Lakers with 11 kills and Justice Smith added nine in the match. The same teams wrap up the weekend Saturday afternoon in Kingston.
