Kalamalka Secondary completes top-10 ride with eighth-place finish at B.C. championships

The rubber match goes to the bears.

The LV Rogers Grizzlies of Nelson needed extra time to defeat the Okanagan champion Kalamalka Lakers of Coldstream 2-1 in the seventh/eighth place game Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the B.C. High School Senior Boys AA Soccer Championships at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex in the Lower Mainland.

The two teams met twice earlier in the year at the Okanagan Senior Boys Soccer Classic in Vernon and Coldstream. The Lakers avenged a 3-2 loss to the Nelson squad in the tournament's first game by blanking the Grizzlies 3-0 in the tournament championship.

The Lakers went 2-1 in the preliminary round, their only loss was a 3-0 setback to the eventual provincial champion Windsor Wolves of North Vancouver. Kal blanked the Charles Hays Rainmakers of Prince Rupert 5-0, and edged the Hugh McRoberts Strikers of Richmond.

Finishing second in Pool C, the Lakers advanced to the placement round for a shot at finishing as high as fifth place, but lost their first playoff game, 1-0, to the Langley Fundamental Titans. That dropped Kalamalka to the match for seventh place against LV Rogers.

The Grizzlies fell 4-1 to the St. Thomas Aquinas Fighting Saints of North Vancouver in their opening playoff round match.

The Nelson team also went 2-1 in its preliminary pool, beating the Pacific Academy Breakers of Surrey 1-0, and downing the St. Michael's University School Blue Jags of Victoria 1-0. The Grizzlies lost 5-0 to the Langley Christian Lightning.

Windsor defeated Langley Christian 1-0 in the gold-medal match. Brentwood College of Mill Bay, on Vancouver Island, captured bronze in the 16-team tournament.

After going 0-3 in the round-robin, the Okanagan runners-up, South Kamloops Titans, won their two placement games to finish 13th.
