The Mandalorian season 2 finale post credits scene explained

What is The Book of Boba Fett and what does this mean for Baby Yoda?

The Mandalorian season 2 episode 8 spoilers follow.

The Mandalorian has been crammed full of surprises in season two – think Baby Yoda's mouth when it's stuffed with macaroons – but the finale was so overwhelming that watching it felt like that moment when Grogu ate too much and vomited up some of those yummy blue treats.

To quickly recap, Mando led his allies on a rescue mission to retrieve The Child from Moff Gideon. Things went pretty well until the Dark Troopers threatened to overwhelm his team completely. Thankfully, a de-aged Luke Skywalker popped up in time to save the day and take Baby Yoda away to train him in the ways of the Force. Cue many, many tears and another glimpse of Pedro Pascal's beautiful face.

Then the credits suddenly arrived, leaving us with plenty of questions. Is that the end of Din Djarin's story? Will he ever be reunited with Baby Yoda again? And what moisturiser is Mark Hamill using? While we still don't have all the answers, a surprise post-credits scene may have given us a strong hint at what lies in store, potentially changing this show forever.

In one final surprise sequence, Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) appears in Jabba the Hutt's palace, followed shortly by Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison). Together, the bounty hunter duo kill everyone in sight (including Return of the Jedi's Bib Fortuna) and take over. As Boba takes a seat on the throne, Fennec swigs a drink alongside Tattooine’s new crime boss in that kind of nonchalant way snipers do.

A title card then appears with a new chapter name, 'The Book of Boba Fett', which is scheduled to air December 2021. This huge reveal comes just a day after we learned that Jeremy Bulloch, the actor who originally played Fett in the Star Wars movies, sadly passed away, aged 75.

But amidst all this, how does this post credits scene impact The Mandalorian moving forward in season three?

While some outlets already claim that 'The Book of Boba Fett' is actually a new spin-off show, we're not so sure. After all, Disney already announced a ton of new Star Wars spin-offs just last week. Why would they hold this one back?

It's also worth bearing in mind that the release date mentioned here is the same as The Mandalorian season three. Of course, it's entirely possible that Disney may choose to run two Mando-style shows alongside each other at once in December 2021 (perhaps even connecting the pair on a weekly basis). However, it's also possible — and perhaps more likely — that Boba Fett will now take centre stage in The Mandalorian instead moving forward.

Either way, 'The Book of Boba Fett' will likely focus on Boba's mission to take over what's left of Jabba's Empire. Along with Fennec, expect to see other Star Wars favourites return too, but will they be with Boba or against him? Perhaps this post-credits scene is actually setting Temuera's character up as the show's new Big Bad?

Either way, the biggest question of all is how does this impact Din Djarin and Baby Yoda moving forward. Surely The Mandalorian can't survive without everyone's favourite macaroon-guzzling muppet? But if Boba Fett is indeed the new face of this story, it's hard to see how Grogu would still fit into all this.

It would be extremely ballsy of Disney to sideline its biggest cash-cow in season three. Even people who don't care about Star Wars love Baby Yoda, but that goodbye that Grogu and Mando shared felt awfully final...

From day one, Din's mission has been to reunite The Child with others like him who can teach him the ways of the Force. Now that mission is over, what's left for them? Instead of dragging this story out even further, or carrying on Mando's story without Grogu, maybe the smartest thing to do is rewrite the rule book completely and put Boba centre stage.

After all, Boba Fett is one of the franchise's most popular characters for a reason, and even if Din's story is over, that doesn't mean Pedro Pascal can't return occasionally for a cheeky cameo.

Then again, we could be completely wrong. And if so, we'd be happy about that, because it would mean that Baby Yoda will then definitely return to our screens after all next year, grubby macaroon in hand.
