The former Cardinal Ritter College Prep star receiver had the best performance of his young career in the Detroit Lions 26-20 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the season opener for both teams.

The speedy Williams had five receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown. He scored on a 59-yard pass from quarterback Jared Goff in the third quarter to give the Lions a 17-3 lead. Williams was also a threat in the running game as he scooted for a 13-yard carry on an end-around play.

A healthy Williams in the lineup provides the Lions with an explosive big-play performer that makes a strong team even better. The Lions advanced to the NFC championship game last season and came within a whisker of getting to their first Super Bowl.

Williams was in St. Louis at his alma mater for the opening week of the high school season. He had his number retired in a special halftime ceremony during Cardinal Ritter’s victory over Jackson.

Another St. Louisan with the name Williams was also prominent in the Lions-Rams game. Former Vianney star Kyren Williams was the Rams leading rusher with 50 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.
